Lighting the non-white face

When I look at old shows (and most movies) from the 60s they look very flat and dull. It's like they had given up trying.

 

Television looks a lot different today. I think it had to. Flat and dull wasn't going to sell anymore.

 

This article has broad level discussion of doing better lighting, for non-white skin tones and just to not look like 60s TV.
