Making the Medal (Insect Image Contest)

Recommended Posts

  • Hash Fellow

Three talented winners of the Insect Image Contest will be awarded a medal for their achievement.

That means there needs to be a medal!

Currently the plan is to 3D print the prototype, create a mold and cast it in actual metal of some sort.

First draft of a design for the Award Medal. Additional suggestions welcome, of course

That's quite an ambitious award! I like the design, needs say 'Hash' or 'A:M' somewhere's

That will definitely get in there. I'm thinking something like ANIMATION:MASTER INSECT IMAGE CONTEST would circle around the edge.

... what is the translation for us who are not up on our latin?

e panni, elegantia... from patches, elegance

If you drop the 'insect' in there the same mold can be used for future contests.

But then there is still the giant ant in the monitor... :D

None-the-less, I haven't decided yet whether this should be a universal design or something specific and unique.

But then there is still the giant ant in the monitor... :D

I suppose that could be a 'tip-o-the-hat' to the first contest that gave out a medal? ;)

Or... every future contest could be an "Insect" contest. Problem solved!

There isn't much room to move things in front of other things to suggest depth in a low-relief sculpture.

Everything is really on the same level which creates unattractive intersections in overlapping shapes.

To try to make the monitor frame appear to be behind the oval (the ant head) I make some cuts in it and slope it down to the background level before it contacts the oval.

To better understand the capabilities of the 3D printer I made this sample model that has small variations on shapes and sizes and slopes and angles...

... and I sent that to Ken. Ken's printer uses a liquid resin that is cured in place by laser beams. Ken printed it out using the finest detail possible. It took nine hours to "render" but the result is quite promising.

The spotting and ripples that appear are on the back, not on the modeled surface side, and get sanded off before the two halves are joined together.

It looks like a 3D scroll...

But it's really just a low-relief sculpture!

This is the "reverse" of the award medal, where the winner's name will be laser-zapped.

It took me a long time to wrap my mind around how to make that 2D design work in splines but now it think I've got it.

Still need to find a better font for the text.

WAY COOL! Forgive my roman ignorance--- what is MMXV, the year?

Yes, Roman numerals. We could Arabic numerals if the Roman numerals were too pretentious. You're the one who has to wear it, of course. :)

Here's an interesting puzzle... notice how "FORUM" is shaped differently in the last two pictures, even though I haven't changed anything about that piece of text.
