Well….ummm….rather than rave on about were I’ve been and what I’ve done I’d rather talk about what I’m doing now.....coz thats more fun :D
I’m currently experimenting with mixed digital mediums to produce a kind of painterly matt-painting. The technique is this…
- First develop a bit of a mental plan for the composition, colours and subject then do a rough drawing……sometimes “VERY” rough. For me it’s more important to get the idea out first than to get too bogged down in the details
2. The next step is to overlay and blend any photo’s or 3D renderings together in
Photoshop to create your typical Matt-Painting. I usually do this in
surprisingly low resolutions…say about 1024x756 at 72DPI.
3. Once all the artwork is complete raise the DPI to 300 and save it in an
uncompressed image format such as a .BMP or .TGA
4. Finally I bring it into Corel Painter 9.5 and paint over the picture using an oil
brush with the quick clone technique. Could also use ARTRAGE $19.95 US
The end result is well….a high resolution digital oil painting achieved in a very VERY surprisingly short amount of time. How short I here you say? The pictures below were each created in one to two days. I think thats pretty quick!!
If you are interested in of these techniques I have provided some links and tips at the bottom of the page.
< Left is the finished product. You can't see the brush strokes as well here
because the resolution has been reduced but it does still have that oily look.
< Here is a closeup of a small section of the previouse image.
This is pretty close to 100% size and you can now
make out the brush strokes. The end result looks great in print.
<This image has just left photoshop and is now ready for painting.

Quick Clone in Corel Painter 9.5 alows you turn any photo into a painterly work of art in minutes. You simply load in your photo, create a quick clone of the image then start painting over it with one of the clone brushes. The direction you paint in determines the direction of the brush strokes. IT'S TOO EASY!!
A much cheaper option is ART RAGE much the same results for about $19.95 US....awsome program for the price!!
Matt-Painting is the art of compositing photo’s to create a realistic scene. Interested?
