This image shows the results of my research. The image on the top is a screen capture from an episode, the image on the bottom is a CG rendering of the model I constructed.
This model was created in Hash's Animation Master, a full featured patch based modeling, animation, and rendering package. The image here was created about six months into the project. The model now has over fourteen months of development behind it, and has been almost fully remodeled since the image was created.
Given the paucity of original production stills, and the quality of film footage remaining from the sixties, and the fact that the eleven foot miniature currently at the Smithsonian has been restored (sometimes radically) three times, any new representation of the Enterprise is going to be an interpretation. I've cross referenced all the archival material I could get my hands on to get what I feel to be a definitive arrangement of shapes, lights, and windows. Where discrepancies exist between published schematics, I've resolved them against photographs of the miniature at the Smithsonian, and for details that don't show up there I went back to footage from the episodes.
