I recently purchased a wacom pad... WooHooo! I love it!

...and... I got a little carried away...

As I did this I got an idea for a spoof of a childrens show.

A group of characters who live near an enchanted forest in a magical world are trying to produce and sell a childrens show to the networks.... their attempts fail at best and will provide many humorous diversions... (click the images for a larger version).

user posted image

Happy Bear will be the host of the show. He is not very happy,
"What do you mean I have to dance? Is that in my contract?"

user posted image

Happy Gopher is his side kick. Forced to find some kind of work after being laid off, he makes an effort but his heart isn't in it. He would prefer to drink beer and watch soaps,
"Oh come on! I just opened it!"

user posted image

Larry Liger is really the only member of the cast who appears to be devoted to making the show work... his motivations are misleading as he is horribly addicted to caffiene and is on a constant caffiene buzz... until he crashes... usually during a song and dance for the kids,
"WOOHOO!! YeeHaa! Wipeee!! Zoooom! Zooom! Tra la la...."

user posted image

This image is misleading as Ethel will be too small to see most of the time.
Ethel the Magic Fairy. She causes some concern for the enchanted forest censors who are concerned that her title may be found offensive in some way,
"But I am a completely nonsexual mythological creature you idiots! What's the problem?"

Anyway, another project to add to my list.

(Happy bear is coming along nicely.. see post below)

wow grt sketches and story, it makes me wish i had come up with it

how'd you design those in photoshop? i couldn;t design a character in photoshop for my life! i use paper and penicel sad.gif tongue.gif

That is absolutely hilarious laugh.gif. Great idea! Hopefully that one won't be put at the end of the 'things to do' list. Can't wait to see it-

WooHoo!

Happy Bear lives!

This is honestly my first attempt at using v11 hair.

This is very rough, only has one hair emitter (it needs some more). Colors are too uniform for my taste. Needs some variety.

Anyway will keep tweaking.

I made the arms, legs, head, eyebrows and muzzle all separate shapes for easy animating. This works out well since the hair kind of hides the joins.

Got the render time down to about 30 minutes. My first try was 11 hours... and it looked awful. I lowered the density in the hair material to like 15%.

Wow, looks great.. especially for a rough!

Great idea vern! biggrin.gif

The bear is looking good. It might be an idea to experiment with lighting if you feel the colours are too uniform. Could save time if it works, useful experiment if it doesn't.

Look forward to seeing the rushes.

Best of luck! laugh.gif

Looking great Vern... keep it up.
For a first go round with v11 hair you are definitely off to a great start!

Great stuff Vern, I lioke it!

Just out of interest though, what type of Wacom did you get? Can you also tell me what on earth a Liger when it's at home? I have never heard of the things…

I bought a Graphire 4x6. It may seem small but it is perfect! Comes with a two button mouse, which is great. I switch back and forth constantly. I love the two button mouse with AM, I feel like I am on a PC! wink.gif. No more holding the control key!

-----------------

Oh man! The liger!

Unofficial scientific name: Panthera leo/tigris

They are real creatures. In captivity a lion is mated with a tiger. These creatures are bigger than both of their parents. They are HUGE.

"The liger is a hybrid cat that inherits most of the strengths of both parent species and is larger than either."

A liger has the mane of a lion and the stripes of a tiger. Pretty much the way I drew him. I left out the spots though. Apparently lions have spots that become more pronounce when hybidized with tigers.

They never exist in the wild since the animals habbitats don't overlap.

There is a liger named Hobbs at the Sierra Safari Zoo in Reno NV. An average siberian tiger, the biggest cat in the world, wieghs between 400-600 lbs. Hobbs is nearly twice that!

Here are the combos produced and the different names:

male lion + female tiger = Liger (usually sterile not always)

male tiger + female lion = Tigon (usually sterile not always)

male tiger + female tigon = Ti-tigon

male tigon + female ligon = Tig-liger

The comedy potential of this character just makes me laugh! I mean think of the possibilities! Imagine a situation where he has to explain his family tree or his siblings. Imagine the other characters making fun of his name, or his ability to reproduce... hee hee... poor Larry.. hee hee.

One idea I had was to have a childrens show segment where all the characters talk about their families to the kids watching... when it is Larry's turn... well... it gets extremely complicated, confusing and embarrassing.

p.s. I have a friend involved in local theatre who has volunteered to do some of the voices. I also am trying to score some free studio recording time from a friend who has a home/business studio.

I have a completed script for a very short episode one. Maybe 2-5 minutes tops. I love it! It just cracks me up.

What is so great is how simple the characters are. I already have happy bear boned and almost rigged. He is so simple in structure it is very easy to rig. The most trouble is all of the hair of course.

Here is an update folks...

Not on happy bear's hair unfortunately... I seemed to have taken a couple steps backwards and need to do some more tweaking of the hair settings and lighting. I would post an image but my changes look worse than the original so not much point.

I may have combed it too much. He is starting to look like a slicked down yarn bear. I plan to revert back to the original and tweak more carefully.

In the meantime I thought I would post my rotoscopes. they might be of interest to new users or whatever.

As you can see Larry has changed in appearence quite a bit. I changed his legs. I want him to look like he is wearing baggy tiger pants almost. Sort of like the cowardly lion from the wizard of oz. I also plan to change his name to the "Happy Hybrid" rather than half breed. Less offensive.

Keep in mind these rotoscopes are just for general reference as I model. I will make a lot of changes as I go along.

Happy Gopher (Gary)

Nice pics of your character Vern... Awesome use of a wacom too I might add!
If the stories are anything like your art and indications you've got another winner on your hands!

Keep on posting! smile.gif

Like the look of the characters. Nice pics! Look forward to seeing this develop. Your wacky sense of humor will likely give them a lot of life. For some reason I imagine them being bossed around by a cockroach as director and a toad as the not too "with-it" producer (but that is my somewhat lame imagination...so just ignore it...). Hope this becomes one of your priority projects!

I've been using a Graphire 2 for quite a while and love it for both modeling and digital painting. (I can't use a mouse for long any more anyway without serious physical pain due to repetitive stress injury, having used a mouse so long to draw and paint.) I find a stylus gives me much more natural and accurate control. Would recommend any of the Wacom stylus pads for any such use. Nice to have the relatively inexpensive Graphires as an option.

...For some reason I imagine them being bossed around by a cockroach as director and a toad as the not too "with-it" producer....

Thanks for the comments!

Actually the director, producers and other "suits" will never be seen. I like the idea of these characters always being off camera or only dealt with by phone.

The only additional characters I plan to create for later episodes (if they ever happen) will be the guests on the show and possibly an office secretary (agnes).

I have several episodes (short, 1-2 minutes tops, if that.) written. A few of them only have two characters interacting.

This first episode has all the characters and will be the most difficult to animate. It is very short but has a fair amount of fast dialogue happening quickly with all the characters in shot.

My favorite idea after the first episode involves:

Happy Bear, going to Happy Gopher's house so they can go for a walk through the enchanted forest.... the problem of course is that Happy Gopher has a "guest" and would much rather be the "Lucky" Gopher than go for a walk "through some stupid, wet, dank, bug infested, enchanted forest".

Most of this episode has Happy bear talking to the closed door of Happy Gopher's house with the muffled voice of Happy Gopher telling him to go get stuffed.

I also keep having this vision in my head of Happy Bear hitting Larry on the head with a frying pan. You know that very unique gong like klunk of a frying pan on someones head? I figure at some point Larry will just be so manic from the caffiene, that this will be the only way to stop him. I envision Larry singing some annoying kids song on the show that repeats forever and he just won't stop... there will be a time transition fade and he will still be going strong and then... thunk!

Anyway, this is top on my list of personal projects right now. the characters are very simple (have almost two of the four done already!). I have, so far, one volunteer voice actor, possibly some free studio time and, it makes me laugh. It is also very cynical which is how I feel right now, plus I have a completed script.

And I have some silly music for the childrens show theme. That is part of what inspired this. I write music for fun on the computer, and I have 4 or 5 of these really cheesy cutsie short songs. They sound just like childrens show theme songs. I kept thinking "what the hell am I going to use these for?!" BINGO!

I plan to record if possible as many episodes as I can in the time I can get. They are all very short and this will give me enough raw material to last for a while.

Of all the ideas I have had in the past, this one has me the most excited, and the most confident of actually finishing something! By hook or by crook it will get done.

Still learning about hair!

In the meantime....

here is Larry Liger's big head!

Very rough so far, and of course, no hair yet. I kind of like him!
I think what is so fascinating is how different (better?) the model looks than the original sketches.

I can see you doing this in 2d instead.

Check out Atomic Betty online they used Flash for the pilot episode

Also feel free to check out www.newgrounds.com
www.iwantmyflashtv.com, www.xombified.com, etc. alot of 2d work. I don't know I just like your 2d stuff alot.

I can see you tossing out tons of episodes quickly using Flash.

...I can see you tossing out tons of episodes quickly using Flash.

Well,

I don't think it will have the impact that 3-D would have. Yes I probably could do it faster with flash but....

Nope, going to do it in AM. I will definately do an animatic... probably not flash. To be honest I don't like using flash that much. I like using After Effects for my animatics. Timing in flash is tough to pin down. Different speeds on differnt processors. Too much work pinning down the timing.

Also these characters are so straight forward. they are very simplistic, covered in hair to hide the awkward bits. Rigging will be a piece of cake. I already started rigging happy bear. Just using a few simple fan and cog bones for the joints. Very basic. Most of the work will be poses for the face. Lots of eye expressions and eyebrow movement. Happy Bear has separate eyebrows that slide around on his face. He reminds me of that toy robot bear from the movie AI.

Larry Liger is almost done! I have decided to paint hair maps for length and density just to try it out. I find it just a little bit slow trying to use the hair tools to get everything right. My computer is just a little slow. Needs a new faster card for realtime display.

Render times are not bad at all even with all of the hair! I plan to render and composite in layers as much as possible. This should speed things up.

I have never been able to model this fast before... I don't know what happened. I did Larry's head last night in about 2 hours... I just did most of the body tonight in about 3. Happy bear I did in a couple of days. Don't remember exactly how much time went into him but it couldn't have been that much.

Happy Gopher is going to be a walk in the park compared to the other two. Ethel the Fairy will not be a model at all! She is just a partical effect.

Another thing I might do to speed up production is use a lot of moving static background images rather than try to build complicated sets. This might add to the "childrens show" look.

I also might do a lot of the shots from the waist up... as if they were puppets. See how things go.

This is a real project. It is not going to fall by the wayside like some of my other ones. I have been looking at pricing on studio time once I get my voice actors lined up.

My brother, who lives in VA, does some writing, acting and directing in local theater. He is looking over my scripts and is formating them for me. He is also checking on possibly getting some voice actors. I might be going to VA to do the recording. All depends on my available resources.

Vernon "!" Zehr
Rodney
Vern,
I don't know if you have something specific in mind for voices (I imagine you do).
I know there are a few people in the A:M community that do voices... Justin Barrett (too busy I know!) and Kevin Sanderson (http://www.ksanderson.com/) are at least two.

And who knows... maybe it'll only cost ya money. wink.gif

*Note: This is more of a plug for the talent in the A:M Community than an attempt to convince Vern he needs to solicit help from the A:M Community... if that makes sense. wink.gif

Thanks Rodney,

I thought about asking for volunteers on the forum, but I think I would probably be better off working with people I can gather in one place, just to have more control.

I may be an artist but I really want to DIRECT! wink.gif

I don't have specific ideas for all the voices (except what I hear in my head at night, but that's another story).

I do know that Happy Gopher speaks with a funny lispy voice (the big teeth). Depending on my voice resources, Ethel could be a seductive female voice (to contridict her claim that she is a "nonsexual mythological creature"), or she may end up as either a bass male voice or a falseto... that could be funny as well I suppose.

Vernon "!" Zehr

Okay, taking a break from hair... my PC is missing a monitor... long story..

Anyway, I have been working on Ethel the fairy, since I can do fairy dust particles with my Mac.

Here is my very first test. Not happy with the particles. I would like to see more of a "trail" of sparkles. Also I would like the trail to get thinner further away from her rather than spreading out.

Any tips?

Also I am thinking of eliminating her wings... saves time and still looks pretty good.

And I plan to add a new gag to the story line...

Happy Bear gets extremely annoyed at all the fairy dust Ethel leaves everywhere. Of course she thinks it isn't nearly as bad as those curly bear hairs she keeps finding in her food in the office break room.

Enjoy folks!

Vernon "Fairy Dust bunnies" Zehr

Nice work, I like the fairy dust effect. biggrin.gif

I've haven't used particles yet so this may be total rubbish but I'll say it anyway.

Can you animate the particles constrained to a path? If so this would help you with the trail you're after.

If not.......blushes all round! sad.gif

Negate the gravity on the particles so they don't fall away so fast.

And for getting "thinner" how about two particle emitters... one spraying wide, but short lived, and another casting a narrow stream that lasts longer. I suppose you could spread that continuum over several particle emitters for a finer effect.

Does this involve a Clarence Thomas Bear? ohmy.gif
nibble
Yeah, liger, zemule and a host of others. It's almost as if they're related...
Now, if they can get something like a woolly Mammoth clone/cross that'd be something to see. It's possible because Mammoths were so well preserved by a cataclysmically fast ice age (I.E. many actually frozen in their tracks and frozen all the way through requiring very short freeze period)...

Haven't gotten to check out the animation (I'm at work) but the renders and characters look marvelous! Definately don't shelf this idea!:D

Dagnabit!

Thanks Robcat2075
(are you a time traveler and you need to keep track of each of your "versions" by adding the date to your name?).

I just remembered that from my cereal particle experiments!

Right now the emitters are coming directly out of her body, so of course they spread out. I need to create an "invisible" emitter that will "aim" the particles to more of a point.

I completely forgot about gravity. So, if I turn off gravity, the particles will still stream away from Ethyl....Ethyl... Holy cow what a great typo! I am changing her name to Ethyl...

..anyway they stream away, but don't fall down.

I am definately going to add more emitters with different behaviours. I am also going to animate the colors and life span of some the emitters to use for lip synch...

So as she talks the the color will shift in time to the voice, and possible "expand" slightly. My concern is that you won't be able to tell she is speaking. I will also use the color change to indicate emotions, possible also making the particle emitter "vibrate" if she gets really angry.

I had another great idea to use a very large emitter image that is a soft ring around her. Like concentric circles of "smoke" that slowly expand and vanish...

THIS...IS...FUN!

I am still kind of amazed at my progress! I actually rigged ethel with the 2001 rig... in an hour. I added weighted CPs for the joints. It was so simple! I have never been able to do this kind of thing with such confidence. I think I have hit another plateau in my AM skills.

p.s. Ah! You caught my subtle historical reference! I hope this won't be too extreme.

Vernon "WooHoo!" Zehr

WooHooo!!

Having fun now!

Here is the latest version of Ethel the Magical Fairy:

Wide shot

this one I set the camera to aim at for a closer look:

Close up

What I found is that the drag is what needs to be increased to create a better trail effect. Works like a charm. I also set the size and opacity to fade over life.

Still thinking, no wings. It would just add additional work to animate. I may change my mind later of course.

Well...

This walk cycle is totally awful. It is very rough and needs some work. I had thought not to post at all but then realized it would be good to document even the bad stuff.

Larry walkin 3mb QT Sorenson 3 (not to be confused with Christopher Walken):

http://www.lowrestv.com/enchanted_forest/larry_walkin.mov

His texture will be a hair color texture. His mane is geometry right now but I will need to reduce it and fluff out some hair. He has no thumbs, or a tail.

his head looks strange on the body. it has too much specular next to it. unless that's the look you're going for. tongue.gif

Hey heyvern,

I like the character a lot. Kinda makes you wonder what the heck was going on in the lab that day...
Anyway, it looks like his chin is stuck to his chest; seems like it would bounce and jiggle secondary to head motion.
How did you do the leg textures? Decal or procedurals? Looks great!

cfree68f
Vern,

"who's that walking down the street" (chorus of funky ladies sing) "LARRY!"
"who's that walking to the funky beat" (chorus of funky ladies sing) "LARRY!"
"He's a tall cold drink of .... of...." What is he exactly again blink.gif

Just kidding man. I like him... I like him allot. and I don't think the walk cycle is that bad... but I notice it bounces a little much in spots and lacks some secondary motion, that gives him a feeling of weight. I mean look at that head "Its Huuuuge!!" Kidding again. My point is that where he's big... animate him responding to that bigness. if his heads a melon.. make it sway a little...

just 2 cents which you obviously don't need man! The whole endeavor looks awesome and your progress and growth in the project is truly inspiring. Keep it up man.

Colin
heyvern
Yes, his chin is weird. That part of his chin on his chest is really suppose to be hair from his mane.

What i did was to model the geometry based on the hair "shape"...unfortunately. I will have to modify him when I switch over to my PC with v11 to do the hair. I am doing the basic stuff on the Mac where I am more comfortable (the chair at the PC makes my back hurt...just kidding).

I plan to make his mane hair long and hang down over his chest and back.
I had a crazy idea in a "future episode" where Larry loses all of his hair and has to wear one of those cones on his head. I will have to do a separate model if I get that far.

The decals are... decals. Made in Photoshop. that was tricky. Funny shaped legs, decals in three pieces, sides, front, back.

I found a coool trick! I made the side decal and applied it. I then did a final render of a flattened pose WITH THE DECAL SHOWING! I used that to paint the front and back. The stripes matched PERFECTLY! Can't see the seam at all.

-----------

This is a sketch of where Happy Bear lives... I WANT TO LIVE WITH HAPPY BEAR!

user posted image

The final won't look like this or be in this style. This sketch just helps me get a feeling for the final product. Very inspiring. I will have the Happy Sun rise over his house as the camera tracks through the door. I do plan to use a lot of layers with images for backgrounds and foreground elements (depth of field) to save time on production.

You are getting weirder than me Vern! I was looking forward to the incompetant secrete agent!

Don't worry Rich, The Incompetent Secret Agent is still alive.

The happy bear project however, is so much easier to work on. ISA has like 7 human characters with fingers!

Happy Bear really only has 3 characters, no fingers, and since they are not human a lot easier to model, plus it is shorter by more than half... and it keeps making me laugh... and my brother is now part of the production (he is rounding up actors and studio recording time).

On that note I was playing around with some stuff and came up with this:

http://www.lowrestv.com/enchanted_forest/coming_soon.mov

I put the above movie together with AE but the sequence of the house on the hill was done with targas created in photoshop and layers in AM! WooHoo! I never did that before! It was fun. here it is by itself:

Here is an mp3 of one of several silly tunes I created that helped inspire this madness. This is the music you hear in the coming soon clip. This will most likely become the theme song:
