I have done some experiments with ocean water during the last couple of weeks.
What do you think?

There is also a movie attached to this message. (the movie is made to loop nicely)

(The attachment has been removed. Look for the updated films in this thread)
johnl3d
very nice ..any hints to how you got there
Emilio Le Roux
Very cool!

What are you using? materials or textures? displacement or bump?
Great look!

WOW! blink.gif
That is even better than the last post!
The sky and color you've added really make that look great.

Nice!

I use displacement and bump maps. I calculate them in a 'tool' that might be called 'Ocean generator' in the future...
If I find time to finish it, that is wink.gif
starwarsguy
that's some amazing stuff! biggrin.gif
Aminator
Beautiful! Very realistic, making me seasick watching it.

Looking forward to the ocean generator!
mtpeak2
Amazing!!!

Add a little camera movement and it would be even more convincing.
nerrazzi
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

I love it man! I freakin' love it! Especially the low render time per frame, eats Terragen for breakfast!
Now, if there was some way to get the water to react with a boat or swimmer <peh> that would be phenomenal!

You and Marcel ought to hook up and make it happen...

So is it that reflection material you use that gives the water it's color? 'cause it was blue last time...

GREAT WORK MAN! GREAT WORK INDEED!
xor
Awesome work. I love it.

However, it does seem to be moving perfectly and then jerk into reverse or a different direction instead of smoothly. (does that make sense)?

It seems to do that twice.

Other than that, it's awesome. I'm sure that's an effect that would be used quite often.
KenH
WOW! Please finish that tool! smile.gif

Lance: I think you're referring to the bigger waves that cause the whole surface to raise and fall. Perhaps they could be abit smoother.

I tried that, but maybe a little too much though rolleyes.gif

I found a little 'bug' in my code and now it's less jerky:
KenH
Bravo! Now where are my trunks! smile.gif

Oh yeah...how have you done the sky?
mtpeak2
This is looking great!

Is there a way to adjust the wave intensity?
zacktaich
Very cool.

If you look at the movements carefully you can see that the movements are unrealistic, but the cameras moving, the environment, and the fix in your code really helped catch your eye, so you don't realize any slight problems.

Awesome job.

we want ocean tool!! we want ocean tool!!!

Great work!!!

We want ocean tool

sell for 20 bucks and make some money, but we want ocean tool!!!

That's just an image on a sky dome.

QUOTE(mtpeak2 @ Aug 18 2004, 04:17 AM)
Is there a way to adjust the wave intensity?

Yes, there is. The wave size, speed and wind direction is set in the 'Ocean generator'. Since the waves are displacement and bump maps in A:M, the amplitude is easily adjusted by their percentage values.

But I hope to get that sorted out before I'm ready... wink.gif

Thanks! biggrin.gif

This introduces an interesting question, however.
What do you want in an ocean tool that you are ready to pay $20 for?

As it is today, the 'Ocean generator' can do what I have shown, but no one but myself can run it tongue.gif. Making it more user friendly is necessary of course, but what else?
entity
Being able to detect edges of an object ... like your famous footprint or more to the point caustics test?
I understand how you did the footprints, so if we had "ocean generator" could there be a way to add and animated object mask so that the waves could have something to react to- like an island, shore or floating person?? Or would that be over-kill? Maybe in v2.0?
Flog
Basically a tool that would have

a) various ocean colors and settings

cool.gif can adjust waves height and wave amount, you know calm-waves

c) direction of waves

d) whirlpool option

e) sensitivty (how it reacts with objects in it)

this would be a great tool!!!
aaver
I'm sorry, but I have to disappoint you sad.gif Most of the features you ask for will not be in a $20 tool.

That is reasonable.

QUOTE
c) direction of waves
OK.

QUOTE
d) whirlpool option

Not even in "version 2.0". This requires a totally different approach as does breaking waves. Almost breaking waves, splash and foam might be possible, but don't count on it.

QUOTE
e) sensitivty (how it reacts with objects in it)
I have plans for buoyancy forces and water ripples due to floating objects, but that will be for "version 2.0"

QUOTE

Yes it would, but also an expensive one wink.gif

I realize that what's left might not be interesting enough to even pay for, but full blown physically based realistic water is a hard thing to program and nothing I had in mind for the moment.
Flog
well if you can start simple and we'll still buy it!!!
Eos
Photorealistic!!!

Good job! Who said something like this couldn't be done in A:M? Take that, 3d modelling professor!!

How about a lightning?
mtpeak2
Eos, funny you mentioned lightning. I was just playing with aaver's project file he kindly posted. The lightning is the model I've been working on with poses sliders for different strikes.

I agree. My water shouldn't fool anyone..
..yet wink.gif
I have rendered another short with some other water parameters. I hope you haven't got tired yet rolleyes.gif

Nice rolling waves! It's getting better and better. Where's the Titanic?!! laugh.gif

Hand me a Titanic model and I'll be happy to sink it for you wink.gif

I work with the last version of 10.5 and every time I try to open the prj file, A:M crashes...
so I tryed for about 10minutes to create an ocean near the beach by myself
williamgaylord
Nice work!

Not sure how much more realism I can take guys....
I think I'm getting seasick....

er... excuse me....
gschumsky
That is freakin amazing. It look just like the morning waters out in front of Morrow Bay. The cloudy sky, the reflection. The may not be perfectly photrealistic, but it's definately top notch, coming out of Pixar/Dreamworks/PDI stuff. Nice job!

3DArtZ
I live on the beach and I surf whenever there are waves. On days when the wind is low and the lighting is overcast, early morning or evening, the ocean looks just like these samples.
I don't think you could get any more photorealistic than this..... going on my own experience that is.

WOW! That is absolutely amazing!

Now A:M just needs a great water flow simulation plug-in.
Heiner
Waaay cool,
even if such a tool could "only" create a surface, waves, adjustable wave length, speed and (maybe) the relevant materials, i would buy it for 20 bucks ...

That is so freakin amazing, even though it seems like I'm really late in posting huh.gif I am trying to find out the best way to make water right now for a scene I'm making. What the best way to animate bump maps?? I have programs to animate 2D but I have no clue how you would make it look good unless you drew every frame, do you transition it some way?

I agree that your water looks extremly photo realistic, nice job!
noah brewer
Truly inspirational! It's amazing to see what can be accomplished with A:M and some hard work. Well done!

I'd like to add a reponse to the question you raised eariler of "What I like to see in an ocean tool."

Some sort of proximity detail control

To explain further, I have a full scale battlehip I constucted and placed on my ocean grid. My project has a humgus sky dome. So what I need is losts of ocean detail around the ship but very little at the edge of my dome. My attemps at this were to create a grid of squares where they are very dense/small in the middle and very sparse/large at the edge. So far this hasn't work very well for me.
