So now that I have finished building my new computer (minus the defective video card which is being replaced) I was thinking about how tech has changed over the past few years... and with relatively small outlay of cash over the years I have 20 cores over 5 machines that I can through at a rendering project if need be.
I feel like just 5 years ago, that was pretty much out of reach for most small/independent 3d graphics people.
Now I just need some animation projects to render out:)

I'm still on one core, my Athlon 3200XP
I have two unused PCs but those are so much slower as to not be worth keeping set up.

I have the following (at home):
6 cores on 3 computers...
- Phenom2 955 (4x 3.6 GHz) (can run higher too, but if not needed I use it at 3.6 because otherwise it consumes too much power for nothing)
- Athlon64 3000+ (1 x 1,87 GHz)
- AthlonXP 2000+ (1 x 1,67 GHz)
In general I only use the Phenom2 because it is so much faster than the others.

My new PC has 4 x 2.5.
The computer I just built for my wife has 2 x 2.6.
The laptop my son is using has 2 x 1.8.
My son's computer is 2 x 3.0.
When it comes down to it though, I am only using my computer for A:M.

I have been buying whatever I can afford leading up to my movie Project. Currently I have:
1 x i5 2.5ghz (4) Laptop 64bit
1 x Core2 3.1ghz (2) iMac 64bit
1 x Core2 2.4ghz (2) iMac 64bit
1 x Core2 2.1ghz (2) Laptop 32bit
1 x Core2 2.1ghz (2) PC 32bit
1 x DualCore 3Ghz (1) PC (Predecessor to the Core 2 Duo) 32bit
1 x P4 3.6ghz (1) Laptop 32bit
A total of 14 cores (all on the one network). I have other PC's and Laptops but they are ancient (more than 5 years old) so are used for other purposes. Note that I have had to move a portable AirCon into the study to keep the temperature down. When these machines are rendering the study heats to 30+ C. With the AC I can keep it in the low to mid 20's.
Cheers

Sounds like this would be good project for the winter.
