The Making FX blog is largely, although not entirely, devoted to traditional (non-CG) movie effects, but it may give you ideas for translating those techniques to your A:M projects and, of course, they are interesting in themselves for their ingenuity and simplicity sometimes.

We've gotten so used to CG that I think many people have forgotten that traditional effects may still be superior. I wonder if most filmmakers reflexively choose to do things in CG when they might do better (and maybe even at less expense) with traditional work.

Last year I saw the movie "Moon" and was stunned at how realistic the special effects were. I learned afterward that they were done with miniatures instead of CG.
