I thought I would try my hand at SimCloth again. Learned a lot, what a powerful feature! Here are my tests:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdUVO9K2AvsThese represent about a weeks-worth of trial and error...simulating and resimulating over and again, trying to achieve 1) a dynamic skirt 2) skirt with reactions to outside forces

Looks real good! Yes, I think cloth is much more powerful than we've given it credit for.
My one suggestion would be to decrease the stretch parameter to make it look less rubbery. Unless it's a rubber skirt.

Another excellent test from Mr BigBoote! Love how you composited your character.
Also looks like you had dynamic constraints, bvh motion? as well as dynamic hair going. Quite the collection of dynamic stuff.
Was there collision detection as well?
The hair looks too twitchy - perhaps you didn't use "bake particle systems" ? My guess is no one else noticed or cared as they were distracted by other attributes. For curiousity sake, was it spring type hair ? or normal constraint type?. what vers 15?

Hey Nancy- I am on V15i. The hair is quite bouncy for me too. It is not 'spring' or 'constraint' it is 'none'. Constraint was even more bouncy. Yes, collision-detection on the cloth, and yes...BVH and hand animated stuff.

i would love to see the settings on the skirt. I will be rigging two of my characters with cloth. Excellent work

SWEET! Great job.
I would love to see your settings as well, I have been working in my char. again with 'dynamic constraints' (her breast and buttocks) and
redoing her cloth setting.

Yes, the cloth. That's what we're looking at here, right? It is the cloth we're looking at, isn't it? The cloth? That bouncy , free flowing cloth? Very nice...cloth, that is.
Seriously, though, that really shows the power of AM's cloth. Great job John!

That was awesome, John! Could you save out your cloth material and post it so we can learn from it?

SETTINGS.(attached)
SETTINGS DISCLAIMER: Mileage may vary. Working with cloth is not for the impatient. There are no 'set-it-and-forget-it' settings. You will need to dink and re-dink accordingly with these settings and your geometry. The little keyframes that the cloth simulator makes...those are editable, and I recommend it. For instance, in the final clip on my Youtube samples where the character sits on the stool...I could only make it to the top of her jump and the cloth would go wonky. SO- I kept the keyframes I had that were good...and started a new simulation at a point beyond the crash point (You can do this by disabling the 'Use Chor Time Range' to OFF in the choreography Simcloth box) The 2 simulations melded together on their own and look (to me at least) seamless. For the scene where she lifts her skirt, I could not remember how to get a bone or null to attach to the points where I wanted the lifting action to occur, SO- I simply placed and animated a tube(separate model with the Simcloth deflector applied) to lift and interact with the skirt, moving it back and forth from underneath...then I animated the hands to match and turned OFF the tube for render. Trickeration, I get a feeling the folks at Pixar and people who use cloth in other apps go thru the same nonsense to get what they want.
THANKS for all the feedback!
Gerry
