Hi,

Lots of interesting looking new posts -- wish I had more time to look at them however, I'm upgrading our three main PCs to Windows 7 and since I'm coming from XP it's a disk wipe ergo requiring:
* Re-installing all of my SW (I have over a hundred programs)
* Re-installing any and all updates plus hundreds of plug-ins associated with this SW
* Re-doing all of the settings and configurations

Yes I'm crying on your shoulders however, the one bright spot (I hope) is that these 3 PCs will run like new again. In August I'll purchase (perhaps build) a new development system and I'll shoot for the most powerful thing available (I'll come here for advise when the time comes).

Cheers,
Rusty

At least you'll unleash all the functionality of Windows 7 that you missed out on with Vista. (If you have too much money to be buying programs and not use them, throw some over here!) biggrin.gif

Hi Rusty,

Might be worth doing 1 computer first to make sure everything is going to work properly and not require you to purchase upgrades. I went with Windows 7, and the 3 pieces of software that I use had issues. Actually, for two of them, Windows 7 was nice enough to tell me there were known problems with running the software under W7. The software was Nero 6 (Nero has an updated version that works with W7, but that would have been around $100 to upgrade). The second was Vegas 7 Pro (W7 has a problem with the Media Manager, which is also a Microsoft product). Finally, I had problems with Animation Master due to the W7 video drivers for my NVidia graphics card in my laptop. So, needless to say, I went back to XP Pro.

Obviously the problems with AM and W7 will be a great concern for me -- all my PCs have NVIDIA graphic cards! So far I've only upgraded my notebook and have just started testing 'stuff' on it. I have not yet installed AM on it and tested it.

Clearly the problem will have to be addressed sooner or later. Or AM will have to announce that it won't work on new w7 pcs with NVIDIA cards!

What are some of the problems you encountered and also which NVIDIA driver are you using (NVIDIA's, TweeksAreUs, others?)?

Thanks,
Rusty

I presume you have something like Norton Ghost so that once you have all this done, you can freeze it and go back to it later if anything goes wrong .

Since I'm upgrading from XP to W7, XP is wiped off the system (in fact I'm formatting my C drive) and W7 does a fresh install. In my mind there is no going back but if I had to I'd just wipe W7 and install XP (and the zillion updates) or, more likely, upgrade to W7 pro (or premium?) which I'm told has a Vista and XP emulation. I installing AM now.

Norton ghost does a complete image of the partition. It doesn't care what is installed after you make the image, it writes the image back to the disk and everything is as it was.

I installed the Windows 7 beta a while back, it didn't recognize my internet connection, so 5 minutes later with Norton Ghost I was back to my previously saved fresh install of Win 2000, with all my freshly installed apps, that worked fine.

But I'm just saying, since doing a fresh install is such a hassle you might as well preserve it in its freshly installed state in a way that's easy to get back to. I don't know if Norton Ghost has been updated to Windows 7 yet.

That is pretty cool but for many reasons I'll just bite the bullet--it will take a lot to make me return to XP. On my notebook I saw some minor problems with AM but no show stoppers. I think I'd get another video card before I'd fall back to XP. It's just time to move forward.

I do wish I had more details on AM probs with NVIDIA and Windows 7 though and what driver was involved.

Cheers,
Rusty

Hi Rusty,

Wish I had more info on which video card was in my laptop or which drivers I was using, but I got rid of the laptop and built a new desktop PC instead.

One of the problems I had was the image freezing, even though the program was still running and moving things around. When the screen finally refreshed itself, it would then reflect the changes that were actually made.
