Hi Folks

I have been testing radiosity. I have read all the documentation I could find but it does not seem to work properly anymore. At least int his version. Things look good in the preview renders but when I actually render to file the radiosity dispersers completely after turning off and on Caustics. It does not make sense. This is a real problem.

Could someone test this on there end?

This video illustrates the problem.

I am having trouble understanding what you are having problems with.

Please view the video and test with the provided project.

I'm not sure of your description of the problem, however I recall that caustics and radiosity can not be used together, if that has any bearing on the situaion.

I dont understand because for you to turn on caustics you must first turn on radiosity.

I dimly recall Yves saying such a thing. Something about how you can have radiosity effects and caustic effects at the same time. I could be wrong.

Here's his overview on how to use them in A:M

Perhaps calculating radiosity first (through the choreography (right click-> calculate radiosity)) would help?

Can I ask a few questions on what settings you used to render out this incredibly photo real picture?

Hi Jason
downloaded your prj
and kept your setting but no luck with Radiosity
even though it chugged as if there was
i'm using a mac snow leopard v15 and tried v13
any thoughts

thanks

Where does the soft shadow come from? Do you use Raytracingshadows or zdepth-shadows?

Sure! I've been experimenting with a lot of different settings and variations of settings so nothing is final yet.

I started at 1,000,000 photons (the max) which gives the best results (most accurate) but takes a bit longer (but I can use less samples to get a better image)

Then I went down to 500,000 photons and worked a bit with that and I liked the results, it gave about the same as the 1million photon photonmap and rendered a little bit faster.

Next I went down to 100,000 photons and this is where things got a bit blotchy and spotted. The photonmap looked pretty good and it rendered fast but to get quality results I would need at least 200 samples (too much for test renders).

The 200 sample render = 100 sample render @ 500k photons = 50 sample render @ 1mil photons. This is totally not accurate but it is a rough guesstimate.

The image above was with 1 million photons @ 100 samples, I think (I have about 30 or so similar renders (Im a little unorganized laugh.gif )) thats just the best looking render.

Here are my current settings:

I use the intensity like the shutterspeed of a camera. The higher percentage the longer the shutter is open.

I am using a single bulb light behind the window in a small empty room to simulate the sun.

Hope this helps!

Its a bulb so its ray traced, kleig lights can be z buffered.

Fantastic, So your saying there is only one light in the entire scene? and its a bulb? Interesting that you chose a bulb to simulate the sun when you could have chosen a sun light. What made you make that decision? The desk lamp looks like light but based on what you are saying it does not have a light that emitting anything right?

CCan you post the final gathering settings?

And some of the surface properties for some of the visually interesting objects in the scene like

The walls, desk, bed, and so on.

Or can you make the project available for study? if you feel comfortable.

PS what compression settings/program do you use to compress your screen captures?
