So, back when I bought AM three years ago, I distinctly remember there being the possibility to upgrade your version for 99 dollars. Is this no longer the case? Do you have to either purchase the subscription or the CD for the full price again?

I was going to suggest that you upgrade to use the new models.
AM is taking a look at the character model and hopefully they can tell me what I need to do for backward compatibility. If it is something that I can do then that would save you on that atleast for now.
If anyone has information on what has changed that might affect the v13-15g compatibility with models let me know.

yeah, cause i was contemplating upgrading to 15 for christmas, but 300 dollars is definitely out of my price range, especially with me needing every penny for next years living expenses and tuition

You could go with the subsription, it works out to approximately 14.54 high end Happy Meals.
Personally I think AM is worth more than anything from McDonalds

hmm, but it's only one year and for one computer. I use several PCs and prefer disk as its more permanent

True. I have the cd version here but noticed the web version gets fixed much quicker.
I'm waiting to see what they have to say about the model I sent. Tech support said it will be a bit before they can look at it.
Hopefully it's just something simple on my end.

well, i know a lot of programs don't have backwards compatibilty. for example, flash CS4 will absolutely not run on flash 8, and will only run on CS3 if exported to CS3

Just stick with the version you have. As you've seen, the newer subscription version removes the ability to use more than one machine. Which means it's an inferior version by design. You have the best version right already. No need to "upgrade".

well, it's just there is some compatibility issues, like with the models pixel is making. I can't read them, my theory being my version is too old. also, V15 has new stuff in it which I see as advantageous, such as liquid and more export options, though I imagine I'll get someone else to export stuff for me.

The old upgrade plan was a great deal, but if it wasn't working out for them they couldn't keep doing it.
the new pricing is still a good deal; have you checked out the "upgrade" prices from other apps? You could buy A:M for 20 years and not reach their one-year upgrade price. And you hear people complain on CG Talk that all they did was add new bugs.
The A:M price is what it is for now. Only you can decide if it works for you.

A:M changed file formats in with V13. Older models can be read in V13 or later, but models from V13 or later can't be read in earlier versions.
I suppose you could hang out on ebay and wait for someone to sell a V13 disc. It comes up now and then.

well, i'm using v13 now, and I can't read pixels models from V15

Are you sure about not being able to read the v15 file?
I believe v13 will tell you that the file being loaded is from a newer version and may not load properly. If you give it a try, it may still load for you.

well, i tried it in two different computers, and it kept sying things about spline errors and stuff, but it's not giving anyone else that trouble

What version of v13 are you running? I think the last version was 13s or 13r. The latest version of 13 should still be available for download through the Hash ftp site.

You never downloaded the updates for your CD? The ones they kept announcing every few weeks on this forum?
http://www.hash.com/2007web/updates.htm"older updates are available on our ftp site" it says
the update you need is there.

Are you able to open the file now?
I have since tweaked file quite a bit, there was a spline error in the old one that was most likely from when I was unwrapping it which I since disbanded. I also noticed I had a problem with 3 cp's, on on the hand, foot and one in the corner of the eye that would not work in mirror mode.
Here is a snapshot of the newest model.
If you want I can fca it and post the new one in the other thread.

Nov 12 2009, 04:55 PM
Yup need to make the guy, kids etc. I will probably use this character somewhat as a base. Once rigged I'll see if I can salvage that too, if not it will just take more time.
I just heard back from AM support and they said the file isn't compatible, strange you can open it. Guess thats good news I think.

Nov 12 2009, 05:01 PM
i think it was the fact that i just installed a sort of bridge between the two versions. i don't know what to call it outside of update. when i opened the model, it said that it may not load properly because it was made in V15, but it did.

Not strange at all. Just be aware that newer changes to the basic file format will be stripped out of the file when its opened.
Think of this in terms of a program like MS Word where they add in new bells and whistles or update the file format. You may be able to convert the files but they are not strictly compatible. For simple files you may not see much of a change at all but for more complex projects and those that rely on new features not available in previous version you will likely lose something in the conversion.
