I figured I'd start a new thread about the ocean rig. Right now I'm rebuilding the rig to make it more adjustable. Here's a test render of what the rig is doing to the mesh.

itsjustme
Nice! Very cool stuff, Mark!
mtpeak2
Thanks David.

Here's another test. I still need to make some adjustments.

TheSpleen
That is KILLER!!!!!
itsjustme
It's going to look great! Top notch, as usual, Mark.
Luuk Steitner
That looks very cool. Do you like some comments? The waves are moving in straight rows with your rig which is no problem for a close-up, but for a bigger view this will look a bit odd. If you could make several rows of this rig moving at slightly different speeds (and different sine values) there will be much more variation in the shape of the waves.
Can you post a picture of how the your current bone layout is?
John Bigboote
COOOL! Thanks for the glimpse! Is that a tileable square?
mtpeak2
Thanks everyone.

Here's an update to breaks up the wave a bit.

Luuk, comments are always welcome.

Matt, I don't think so, I'll look into it. I may not be able to get it exactly do to the bias on the sides of the grid, but worth looking into.

thefreshestever
thatīs freakin awesome mark... looks very oceany to me... iīll observe the ocean very thoroughly on my croatia vacation next month, maybe iīll come back with some suggestions then wink.gif
John Bigboote
I'm looking for a model I once made of a wooden Chris-Craft style boat...I want to place it in the 'AMXChange' area... it would be a cool addition...
mtpeak2
Well, I just had to test it out with a boat. biggrin.gif

Luuk Steitner
Wow mark, that works really well with the boat!
jakerupert
Great work so far !

One minor critic though.

To me it gives a little bit the impression as if the waves are moving back and forth
and not rolling from one side of the grid to the other as you would it expect to be.

Is there a chance, that you will make this rigg available like
your fantastic 2008 rig when you have finished it?
itsjustme
LOL! Nice, Mark!
Paul Forwood
Mark, that is the best example of big seas that I have ever seen come out of A:M! Well done!
It just needs whitecaps and sea spray.
mtpeak2
Thanks.

I've added 3 sliders for adjusting the wave on the fly in the user properties or to animate in an action or chor.

Zaryin
That is looking crazy good!
TheSpleen
That is sweet

Mark

Great work. You and some of the other guys keep raising the bar. This would be a great tut.

I'm amazed again, Mark! Very impressive!
robcat2075
If you could just figure out a story that gets your trees on your ocean you'd really have something.
steve392
Ive been working away for a couple of days and come back and youv made this ,teriffic ,that works and looks very good ,the best Iv seen ,well done Mark
John Bigboote
Very cool. Are you limited to that size grid or could the grid be expanded for larger-scope scenes?
Kamikaze
This is why I keep checking in on the forums, you fellas are doing such cool suff like this..I remember when I attempted to make ocean waves with cloth sim....this looks much better than my attempts......Cool, keep it goin...
mtpeak2
Thanks guys.

Matt, sorry but it's limited. If I feel up to it, I'll expand the rig larger.

For those who wish to play, here's the rig model, minus textures. Just drop the model into a chor, set the play range to something like 1000 frames and hit play. While playing the animation, open the models user properties (not the pose slider window). There are 3 sliders that you can adjust and see in realtime in the chor. You can animate it in the chor as well if you want.

mtpeak2
I forgot to mention, it's v13 or better.
TheSpleen
awesome! Thank you!!!!
itsjustme
Very cool, Mark! I haven't seen anything like it, very original and effective.
jakerupert
Thank you very,very much!!!
MJL
Thank You Mark.
mtpeak2
I just made the rig 4 times larger, piece of cake. wink.gif I can make it even larger if needed.
John Bigboote
OHMIGAWSH!

I can't grab it and play until Monday... but this is fantastic! Can't wait! 3 cheers for Mark!
steve392
Hip hip
mtpeak2
Here's a test of the 4X rig. I used Luuk's water material, with some adjustments do to scale of the model.

GAngus
That is SO Cool......
steve392
Thats graet it really doese look like your on the ocean.I think Im gonna be sea sick

DUDE! Absolutely fantastic! You're kicking its' ass, Mark!
John Bigboote
That might just be the most photo-real animation I have ever seen this software create.
nino banano
WOW, Marc, this ocean is amazing...thanks for share smile.gif, the boat_test is terrific
agep
This is Awesome! Your render looks very good! I wish I had your talent when it comes to cool stuff like this
To bad the rig it is to small for my Bismarck model sad.gif lol
Is there some way to make it tilable?

Thanks for the upload Mark

mtpeak2
Sorry Stian, but making an ocean to scale for the Bismarck is a tall order. wink.gif

I have a 4x model, but I haven't posted it yet, it needs adjustments. I would consider making a 16x model, but that would still be too small for the bismarck laugh.gif, but you could probably just scale the rig up at that point. I have experimented with making it tilable, but I couldn't get it quite right, it left gaps here and there. I do have another idea though, which I'll try when I have some time.

jakerupert
What would speak against scaling the Bismarck down?

Would the waves become too big in relation?
serg2
Very COOL mtpeak2!!!!! It can be multiplied and cycled!!

Serg, as I said, I got it close, but not exactly. If you zoom into the seam, you'll see what I mean.
kwhitaker

Yes Wow. Reminds me of The prefect Storm, looks really real. excellent Mark

Yes. I saw and thought how to hide this small artefact
Rodney
This is really amazing to me Mark.
I have no clue how you come up with this stuff.
pixelplucker
Really cool, quality rivals Tsunami plugin for EI
mtpeak2
Just to let everyone know, I just about have a tilable rig. I have a few things to take care of first, so I'll post the rig in the next day or so.
John Bigboote
Awesome!
I played with the rig yesterday (TOP MARKS ON THAT) and setup a render and then took today off (Ferris Buehler day) so I hope to have a render to share tomorrow. I put a character in the water constrained to one of your cross-splines (Path constraint/hold shift key to select) and gave the water a little transparency. FOG also helps to hide the horizon line issue...

THIS IS A FUN MODEL. I have no idea how you contained the motion within the model without an action.

I have been using the GRADIENT material a lot lately...and have been trying to figure-out a way to apply it to your model... so that as the water RISES and FALLS it would change in color value. If I apply it in the model, the action does not respond... I can't apply a material to a group in the chor- can I? Anyone have any ideas on this?
