I figured I'd start a new thread about the ocean rig. Right now I'm rebuilding the rig to make it more adjustable. Here's a test render of what the rig is doing to the mesh.

That looks very cool. Do you like some comments? The waves are moving in straight rows with your rig which is no problem for a close-up, but for a bigger view this will look a bit odd. If you could make several rows of this rig moving at slightly different speeds (and different sine values) there will be much more variation in the shape of the waves.
Can you post a picture of how the your current bone layout is?

Thanks everyone.
Here's an update to breaks up the wave a bit.
Luuk, comments are always welcome.
Matt, I don't think so, I'll look into it. I may not be able to get it exactly do to the bias on the sides of the grid, but worth looking into.

Great work so far !
One minor critic though.
To me it gives a little bit the impression as if the waves are moving back and forth
and not rolling from one side of the grid to the other as you would it expect to be.
Is there a chance, that you will make this rigg available like
your fantastic 2008 rig when you have finished it?

Mark, that is the best example of big seas that I have ever seen come out of A:M! Well done!
It just needs whitecaps and sea spray.

Thanks.
I've added 3 sliders for adjusting the wave on the fly in the user properties or to animate in an action or chor.

This is why I keep checking in on the forums, you fellas are doing such cool suff like this..I remember when I attempted to make ocean waves with cloth sim....this looks much better than my attempts......Cool, keep it goin...

Jul 10 2009, 03:48 PM
Thanks guys.
Matt, sorry but it's limited. If I feel up to it, I'll expand the rig larger.
For those who wish to play, here's the rig model, minus textures. Just drop the model into a chor, set the play range to something like 1000 frames and hit play. While playing the animation, open the models user properties (not the pose slider window). There are 3 sliders that you can adjust and see in realtime in the chor. You can animate it in the chor as well if you want.

To bad the rig it is to small for my Bismarck model

lol
Is there some way to make it tilable?
Thanks for the upload Mark

Jul 13 2009, 10:12 PM
Sorry Stian, but making an ocean to scale for the Bismarck is a tall order.
I have a 4x model, but I haven't posted it yet, it needs adjustments. I would consider making a 16x model, but that would still be too small for the bismarck

, but you could probably just scale the rig up at that point. I have experimented with making it tilable, but I couldn't get it quite right, it left gaps here and there. I do have another idea though, which I'll try when I have some time.

What would speak against scaling the Bismarck down?
Would the waves become too big in relation?

Jul 15 2009, 05:24 PM
Awesome!
I played with the rig yesterday (TOP MARKS ON THAT) and setup a render and then took today off (Ferris Buehler day) so I hope to have a render to share tomorrow. I put a character in the water constrained to one of your cross-splines (Path constraint/hold shift key to select) and gave the water a little transparency. FOG also helps to hide the horizon line issue...
THIS IS A FUN MODEL. I have no idea how you contained the motion within the model without an action.
I have been using the GRADIENT material a lot lately...and have been trying to figure-out a way to apply it to your model... so that as the water RISES and FALLS it would change in color value. If I apply it in the model, the action does not respond... I can't apply a material to a group in the chor- can I? Anyone have any ideas on this?
