I've always thought a Wiki format would be a better way of creating and hosting tutorials.
Hmmm... I'll let Rodney answer that.
Not sure what to answer here.
Almost every idea has an aspect of greatness to it.
The rest of it either won't work or isn't implementable or sustainable.
The wiki idea has been tried and appears to be a little more sustainable than the websites/databases. Most websites are labors of love. Inevitably the labor outweighs the love. Time changes rivers. Links are broken. Old computers tossed in the trash. Hackers break in. Stuff is lost. What we can no longer support... fades into memory.
What wikis usually have that websites don't is more people involved in the process. Websites are usually maintained by one person. Most people don't care to update wikis though. A few fanatics might... for awhile. There is a wiki devoted to A:M right now that hasn't been updated in years.
So yes wikis are a great way of documenting tutorials. Better way? Not sure.
You included 'hosting' as part of the better idea and that may be where it gets broken. Hosting is a different matter. Who is going to host the thing? Who will make sure it remains available? Maintenance... Maintenance is important too! Who is going to pay for the upkeep? Who will monitor it for suitability, accuracy, merit? Everyone likes the idea. Perhaps we can get 'everyone' to do it?
And better doesn't stop there either.
In order to be effective (in the judgement of most people) you'll need to be able to attach files; video, pdf documents, project files and other resources as well. Those that host the wiki I mention above don't allow such attachments. Text and a few images are allowed but with a cap on overall file size uploaded.
So, there we see part of the dilemma.
What then is the solution?
Thankfully, Hash Inc agreed to host tutorials here in the Tutorials forum where they can be kept in perpetuity or until superceded or no longer needed.
Its not cheap to host these files (some are quite large) but they do it anyway. For that they have my thanks.
Thanks for keeping these tutorials available Martin!
(and a special shout out to all who have hosted tutorials on their websites through the years!)
So, there is my answer.
