Are there any first-person-shooter-style controls for the camera that's selected? I've gotten really used to using engines like the Halo 3 theater mode to control my perspective from the first person, and I think it would be a great way to tune composition.

Zoom in/out would also be great.

Not really... you can however move the camera around in camera-mode by holding the CTRL-Button.
But it is not the same as "first person controls".

You could attach a camera as a bone to a person that is moving through the scene.

Rodney has a list of camera navigation shortcuts

When you are looking through the camera:
shift+middle mouse+drag to rotate
press M, then shift+drag to move forward and backward
press M, then ctrl+drag to move up/down and side to side
Use the scroll wheel to Zoom in and out without moving the camera.

Here's a thought, based on something we did in my after effects class: Create a null, and parent the camera to the null. Then you can select the null and manipulate the camera using it's handles.

That's become an 'automatic' in my playbook.

Another thought...you could do the above- and then hit the 'play' button and move the null around 'willy-nilly' and A:M will 'record' your motion input, the result would look like a hand-held camera.... you could also do this with kleig lights for that 'searchlight' effect...
