Ok, I've officially joined SO. Martin has asked me to model Cap'n Bills' bedroom.

I haven't read the story yet and have not followed any of the post about SO, so I was wondering if you guys/gals have a common artistic style/theme that you would like me to follow? Are there any other interior sets that are pretty much done, so I can take notes? Are there any notes or sketches for Cap'n Bill's room? If not, please join in here to throw in some ideas/suggestions as to what you guys think it should look like and what should and shouldn't be in the room.

Looking forward to working with you guys.

Well welcome! It would be good to read the script. For now, I'll just throw out some history, and give you a sense of where we are.

Originally we were talking about doing ScareCrow of Oz in a whimsical fantasy artsy style, using James Christensen type imagery as inspiration. I'm hoping that's still true. The idea is not to copy Christensen - but to get the sorta look and feel combined with originality.

Christensen usually creates imagery reminiscent of Renaissance era with lots of pattern, texture and amusing, exaggerated proportions. Our imagery, models so far are all over the place in terms of era/time frame - late 19th/early 20th century for Capt'n Bill, Trot, Brautigan, unknown eras for other characters. Oz can be a place of many styles, hopefully never seen before. Most design, so far is not that close to Christensen - except for Bumpymans house, and maybe Googly-goo.

King Krewels Palace in my mind is ornate - over the top, reminiscent of the style of overdone ego boosting monarchys - however - I believe Alain was doing some exterior sketches of the palace. He may not be. So the style may be different, more fortress like.

I am not aware of interior sets that have been done yet for King Krewel's castle where Bills bedroom is (I believe the scene in which this is used is 2_12?).

In general - King Krewel has usurped a previous King, and has taken over the palace. Wheither he has redecorated in his own pompous style is not clear.

Prior to the bedroom scene Capt'n Bill goaded King Krewel into providing bedrooms for he & Trot in his "dinky castle" - so my guess is he provoked his ego, into providing them with a more lavish guest bedroom. But he could have provided them with broom closets for all I know.

The bedroom scene is short, will most likely be dark as the King & the witch peek in on Capt'n Bill as he is sleeping, to assess his threat status. I believe this is the set in which he gets turned into a grasshopper by the witch.

Minimally we need a bed, and a wall with a door. Yoop (in TWO) had a bed with a canopy (maybe could be used - modified?)

You could start by looking to see what Ken has layed out for this scene already as a start (proxy set)

Will think some more - but given your great talent - I'm sure you can come up with something pretty terrific.

Nancy:

Thank you for the welcome and intro to SO. I will take a look at what Ken has in terms of proxies after I read the script. I'll also brush up on Christensen to get an idea of what direction to go. Is anyone modeling the palace?

Thanks again

Eric

Good to have you on board Eric!

Yep, I've put together a modified Yoop bedroom for the proxy. And you can see what it needs in the animatics (small blocking movies in another svn tree) I've made for that section. For all the time it has in the movie, I wouldn't spend too much time on it. Just make sure it has a window (for grasshopper to fly out), and it fits beside the corridor model.....as I've joined them in an action for one shot. The corridor was made from scratch for SO.

As long as you adhere to those things, feel free to remake/adjust the room that's there. IMO it just needs more furniture though as the rooms have to be beside each other (and so box like). Also, there are two other rooms (Trot and Gloria) that are copies of/variations on the one model.

The Palace has yet to be modelled. But I believe there are proxy models on someones hard drive. I think you'd be perfect to develop that.

All right, the SVN finally finished downloading. I think this is all TWO stuff? How can I tell if it's SO stuff? I hate this SVN smorgasborg. dry.gif

What actors do you have? - you should be seeing folders that look something like:
Eric2575
Nope, nothing like that. I really thought that I followed the instructions to the letter, and now I don't even know where to begin? Delete all that stuff and start over? What's the correct link to put in the SVN to point to SO? The SVN Walkthrough page says to put this one in : http://project.hash.com:8008/movie/svn/active but it obviously points to the TWO data.

Edit: I figured out the problem. The SVN walkthrough page has the old TWO data link. The how to participate in SO has the correct link. I'm downloading the SO files now.
KenH
Oops. Yes, I think this is the link:

Please bear with me on this, since I just got into this project. Ken, I looked at the chor ActII, Seq12,Sc03 and there is already a bedroom with a bunch of stuff in it. Is this the one you want me to modify, and if so, how, and to what degree? How much time should I spend on this, since it has such a little part? Is there some kind of reference for me to go off of? You aslo said: "you can see what it needs in the animatics (small blocking movies in another svn tree) I've made for that section", where is that?

The reason I am asking all these questions is because I can spend a lot of time modeling something only to find out that it's too detailed, the wrong style, or not even necessary for the scene. Feeling a little bit out of the water here, sorry.

In case you're wondering, Eric, this is the "half-assed" part...

There is no design or animatic for "Cap'n Bill's Bedroom." (The model that is already there is a stand-in.) Your imagination is as good as anyone else's - read the script and see what's in your mind's eye. (While you're at it, imagine what Trot's & Gloria's Bedrooms look like too - and sketch those.)

If you don't think you're a designer, Alain (alweb) Desrochers can sketch something for you (but I'd have to ask him).
Eric2575
Ok, I'll take this and go at it from scratch, per my imagination. Muahahahahaha wacko.gif
KenH
Just make sure the room works with the corridor....

Here's the instruction I got from Will on setting up the Mov svn tree:

QUOTE
the only tricky thing will be is having everybody check it out at folder level next to their existing tree and everybody will have to use the same name if you want relative paths to work.

ie:

c:\mystuff\sodata (existing path for so tree) folder name doesn't matter
c:\mystuff\somov (new folder contains svn checkout of http://project.hash.com/movie/so/active/mov This folder will need a consistant name so you can do ../.. style notation to get out of the main so tree and into the movies with relative paths.

So, you have the top folders of the SO svn and Mov svn beside each other in one folder.

The movs add up to about 200mb for now so you can either download them all or just download the folder tree and pick the folder you want to update.

I've been moved from Cap'n Bill's room to model the Jinxland Palace. Since I started doing a little bit of work on Ken's proxy should I somehow reset it or somehow committ the changes? Right now there are a few red exclamation marks in the SO tree on my drive. I have not done anything as far as the SVN is concerned so I don't mess anything up. Please walk me through this first time. Thanks.

What kind of changes have you made? Then we could help walk you thru

What kind of state are the models in? Do you want to commit the changes? or not?

KenH
When you modify a model, svn puts the red exclamation marks on the files to show that. I assume you're using TortoiseSVN so all you have to do is right click on the files (or on the upper level folder) and commit them. You'll need to put a description in the box to say what you changed. Click ok and it's uploaded to server.

I work at the very top folder. Update or commit......svn syncs all the correct files. No fuss. (On that note, you shouldn't commit the .hinfo files as they're just for your system. You can direct svn to ignore these in the settings.)
Eric2575
No major change. Opened the window up a bit, moved it down somewhat, and gave it a basic frame. Added a wooden chest, a wall sconce and some stone trim around the perimeter of the room. I was playing around with it to see what it would look like. Nothing that can't be undone if it's not in line. So yes, I want to commit what's there. I have two options in my SO tree, update and commit. If I were to guess, I'd say update? Haven't touched anything yet. Thanks for the help Nancy.

Edit: Thank you also Ken, your post appeared as I was typing a response to Nancy. I just committed as per your instructions and it went fine. I put a description in the comment section and also my name.
