I'll claim the pipe, rowboat and spyglass for texturing. That should keep me out of trouble for a while.

Hi everyone,
I've been poking through the SVN repository and it seems the spyglass (or 'telescope' in the repository) is already complete. There's some very nice textures already applied to it. In fact, it's textured exactly the way I was going to do it with brass, leather and glass for the lens.
Also, the pipe doesn't seem to be in the props folder, so I suspect it might be part of the Cap'n Bill character?

That leaves the rowboat, or rowboats, as the case may be, since there's several of them in the 'rowboats' folder. I guess I'll tackle just the rowboats then.

Yes there is a pipe model in Capt'n Bill's accessories folder (located Actors/Cap'n Bill/Accessories/Pipe.mdl
As for the right rowboat - I have a feeling it's the small one because I looked at the chor (1_03_01) in which it's used - but not sure why the other boat is there, if it's used somewhere else.

Yes use the smaller boat. The other one was far too large for an old man to be rowing. I copied and modified it but couldn't delete it.

Okay, I'll work with the smaller rowboat then. With regards to the pipe model - does it matter if it's in Capt Bill's folder? Is that considered "part of" the Capt Bill character, to be textured at the same time with him?

I don't think so. Nancy is texturing or has textured Capt Bill. So i think you can go ahead with the pipe but you might want to check with someone else.

It's a separate model. Nancy is just doing the characters so you won't conflict.

Okay, great. I'll texture the pipe as well.

Hi folks!
I'm back from vacation and I just committed the textured pipe. Here's a small picture of how it looks so far:
Click to view attachmentI tried to give the pipe a mottled, sort of grungy look from years of use. Also, I applied a gradient texture inside the bowl that shows soot from burned tobacco. I used some turbulence so the transitition from soot to the rest of the pipe wasn't a clean line. Of course, any suggestions or critiques are welcome! The one thing I'm not sure about is the brown color applied to the pipe stem. I envision this as a simple clay pipe, and I'm not sure that the color would make sense there. What do you think?

I think it needs more umph. Aren't smoking pipes usually made from wood? If both, go for what would have been used around the early 1900s.

Hmmm...good point. I'll look into it and see what I come up with. Thanks for the suggestion!

Maybe you could use a bump map to give it a little bit of carving detail/design. Just an idea...

I researched the types of pipes that were available in the early 1900s and it turns out that wood, clay, meerschaum and metal pipes were all available. So, the pipe could be pretty much any material. I decided to add some detail to the existing model with gold trim, some roughness on the pipe body and I also added specular to the mouthpiece. Here's how it looks now:
Click to view attachmentI'm wondering how much detail the pipe needs to have, actually. Will there be close-ups? I know the pipe shows up in a couple of scenes in the script. Thanks!

OK....clay it is. That looks good detail wise. Maybe the clay part would be a little specular?

Here's the pipe with some specular added to the body:
Click to view attachmentI can lower the intensity if needed. Personally, I think it makes the pipe a little too shiny.

Sorry to step on your toes but I made a few tweaks on the svn model. I wasn't sure what exactly how I wanted it to look, so I experimented and here's what I came up with. I also made some spline alterations.

No problem. I'll go ahead and make sure I'm in sync with the one on SVN. Can I assume the pipe is done at this point? I'll move on to the rowboat next!

Ken, I'm assuming you'll go ahead and commit your version of the pipe to SVN?

It's there already. Go ahead to the next thing. Thanks.
