So NBC.com has a bunch of old shows for free. I've been watching the original "Battlestar Galactica" and "The A-Team".

When I was younger I liked both of these shows. They were big hits... which means lots of people watched them too right? In the light of more intelligent programming available today it becomes apparent that many of us had absolutely no standards for believability whatsoever.

Now Battlestar Galactica has a fine excuse.. it was science fiction... and it wasn't a bad show... but...

The A-Team? The A-Team are "undercover" hiding from the police and the military... so... you drive the SAME big black van with a distinctive red stripe. What was I thinking? I liked this show?

What about all the shooting? So the bad guys shoot like crazy at the A-Team... empty round after round... then... when they finally stop, they capture them and lock them up to kill them later. IT MAKES NO SENSE! Would the bad guys have been really sad or upset if they had accidentally killed them?

Okay, Battlestar Galactica... those Cylons. Were they programmed by Microsoft? What the heck? They never learned from their mistakes. They just kept doing the same stupid thing over and over. They couldn't hit the side of barn. What was wrong with the aiming mechanism on those ships. With those huge squadrons they should have hit something just by accident. How about all those big gigantic "Star Bases" that kept getting blown up? Every week it seems one of them gets toasted... they should have just saved the effort and just slammed one right into the Galactica... it's going to get blown up anyway.

And why in God's name would inteligent machines hire that Baltar loooser! In like the third episode they GIVE HIM one of those huge disposable ships. He screws that pooch and they give him another one. Time for a reboot. So I just watched an episode where they used hardened criminals... murderers, scum... to go on a mission to blow up a Cylon Death Ray Weapon.... and everyone is surprised when they try to escape?

<sigh>

They just don't make fun shows like that anymore. Now we have to actually pay attention and think really hard to follow the plot... they actually have PLOTS now. Hannibal Smith didn't worry about plots. BA never had to worry about being recognized by the police even though he had the same hair and outfit for 5 seasons.

remember FCC chairman Newton Minow gave his famous "vast wasteland" speech back in 1961

QUOTE
"When television is good, nothing — not the theater, not the magazines or newspapers — nothing is better.
But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air and stay there for a day without a book, magazine, newspaper, profit-and-loss sheet or rating book to distract you — and keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that you will observe a vast wasteland."

production values get better, the visuals more fashionable, but underneath it all it's still 99.9% crap. Which is good because I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

...and somewhere, Dirk Benedict is getting a double-whammy of ear burning... :-)
