Looking through all these posts gives me the impression this world is full of soft bendy stretchy things. Balloons and mushrooms and giggly stones and stuff. I would like to see the plants in the throne room reflect this. Make them appear soft and spongy like weird mushrooms.

Sounds good. The current plants are hasty placeholders. [and...the model was getting heavy] The chandeliers hang from balloons since the script calls for a open-air courtyard.

Here are my concept drawings of the room and what's in the room. I based the concept on Robert Kelly's concepts. On the wall is a flag with the kings face on it but i did not draw it completely because I did not find it necessary. If you guys think the pictures are colored bad/weird, it's because all i have is photoshop and limited to what i can do, and i was going for a water color look.

Nice conceptdrawings and I think the coloring is perfectly o.k. and suited for this purpose..

I don't think there would be tables and chairs in the throne room of such a pompous king as King Krewl. People would be expected to either stand or bow in his presence. Most the the floor space will be clear to allow his subjects to gather and adore him

. Maybe some fancy stone inlay work or large rugs. Most of the design work will be in the architecture and the details. Please be sure to include drawings of all the architectural details (moldings, inlays, bits of sculpture, column capitals and bases, tile work, etc) so the modeler knows what to model. And if you have ideas for tapestries or paintings, you will probably need to create finished images of those yourself.
Pillars of that size would provide support for a far larger room than what is shown. Also, it would be nice to provide some extra space between the pillars and the walls.
Krewl's religion is Power. The throne room is his sanctuary. The room is meant to reek of Krewl's wealth and his power over his subjects, making them feel small, week and unimportant. He will employ any psychological tool available to assert his dominance. All the architectural details will scream, "You are small and weak. I have total power over you. Muahahahahahaha!!!"
If your designs are compelling enough. Maybe we can get someone interested in modeling them and maybe even get some more animators interested in taking on the second half of the movie. Wouldn't that be nice

Ok, I will work on another concept using the advice that you gave me

One thing I would add is to stay away from "fortress" looking - go for opulent, roccoco(ish) style, similar to the grand overdone palaces of Europe

Sorry, I've been busy with school and searching for a job, but I have been working on it. I just got done with one more detailed pictures and continuing to work on the rest since my schedule for the rest of the month is open.

We will need those drawings in the next week or two so someone can start modeling the set. Can you have them done by then?

Here are my finished concepts. Yay!!! I did mess up with the texture on pillars in the picture of the throne with the ogre pillars. The texture that I was going for is on the picture with just the ogre pillar. I hope that these concepts are goon enough for what is needed.

Aragggh! You changed a load of stuff!

While I love the characters in the pillers, I don't think I'll have time to be modelling characters. Unless there are existing ones we can use. For the mural, I think I'll render an image of the 3D Krewl. I think Nancy has a statue we can use too. The end result might be a combination of your two concepts. Here's what I got so far. Thanks to Stian for the armour and someone else for the throne.

I've just uploaded under King krewel's folder a "King_krewel_the_Golden_Poser.mdl. He comes already pre packaged with 3 poses - shown here. Any self respecting, narcissistic monarch would probably surround himself with many artifacts glorifying only himself. Perhaps there should be mirrors about?
And of course - feel free to make some more silly poses (maybe with different text?). Scale the instances differently in the throne room.

lol Perfect Nancy! I think I'll add more space to fit these monsters in.
Thanks unknownbias, I'll experiment with putting my troll in as I think it would look great to have that feature in there.

Jul 14 2009, 09:26 AM
A small update. I can't get the troll arms up to support the columns but I quite like how they're ready to attack in this pose. Nancy I added your model, but I can't get the three statues with the actions from it. Anyway, could you export them out as 3 separate models as then I can just drop them into the assembly action. Thanks.
Adding doorways, murals and windows next.

Ken,
Sorry, couldn`t resist fiddle around a bit with your picture.
I especially would make the floor more smooth and shiny and liked the design , when the figurines are intgegrated into the
column, like coming out of them, giving them a better standing.
just a humble opinion from some SO-passive sidelurker.
Hope you don`t mind.

Hey Ken, the throne room is looking nice.
In addition to jakerupert's comments, the texturing and general appearance so far look a bit rough and primitive compared to the appearance of the outer castle. The outside of the castle looks polished and refined. Is there any way you could reflect that polished, refined impression in the throne room as well?
KenH
Jul 14 2009, 11:40 AM
I took the first material I saw in the Jinx castle folder. What's the name of the material on the outside?
PS I like most of your ideas Jakerupert and am incorporating. I even like the stairs the throne is on but it might make for difficult animation. I think in the script he has to be close to the guests.

The outside of the "Main Entry Hall" appears to have "Bricks.mat" and "White Marble.dsts" materials. But I don't know that it would be a simple matter of swapping out existing textures. Kelly's original model looked refined even without any materials applied. Too bad it was never uploaded.
As an alternative, if you just want to model the geometry (I know you don't particularly enjoy dressing a model up with doo-dads and textures and such), perhaps you could send a dozen roses to the illustrious Madame Gormezano, along with a heartfelt request for her to practice her Art on the geometry you construct.
She has also been known to require a blood oath that you will uphold the virtue and dignity of her efforts. However, once you get over the "Ick" factor of sending her a bit of your own blood, it isn't bad at all.

If you get tired of it, or it becomes too tedious, that's fine too. Just let me know and I'll pick it up.
We also need a half dozen different courtiers (maybe three male types and three female types) with poses to change the color of the clothing for a little variety.
For the villagers, I was planning to use Fat Farmhand, Skinny Farm Hand, Woot's Mom and Nimmee from TWO - with poses to change clothing color. But if anyone has other ideas, that would be great too.

Thanks guys. A little more down the line. It's taking about 14 mins to render per frame. I can't quite get the sun rays working well and they should be the colour of the windows of course. I've got ideas to make statues of Krewl as a cherub but where do you stop.

Very nice advances.
The only thing that bothers me a little is, that this kind of "background" would probably distract from the king and make him look
small and unimportant.
I don`t now, what the intentions here are, but maybe it would be a good idea, to testput the King on his throne to see,
how possibly the focus of interest could be concentrated on him.

I understand your thinking jakerupert, but the psychology might work a little different. That would be an interesting discussion.
If you saw Bill Gates or Steve Jobs standing alone on a Huge stage in front of a crowd and behind him is a 40 ft. jumbotron screen showing himself. Do you get the impression that he is small and unimportant?
KenH
Jul 17 2009, 02:07 PM
Thanks. Yeah, I was thinking that too Jakerupert, but I think big is better than small for this character. He knows he's not really King, so he's making up for it and is making sure you know it. Camera direction will help to keep focus on Krewl. Don't worry about it.

I am loving the room, looks excellent! I think that if the king was kept out of the light, it will give him more of the "villain" look and mood. Because if the blue light were to shine on him, it would make him look good in nature. If light is needed by the king, it should come from torches and still give him the evil look.
KenH
Jul 30 2009, 03:07 AM
Thanks all. That's exactly what I was thinking. Torches lighting him from below would give him an evil look. Not subtle, but with other lighting it could be made so.
