Ok, just upgraded to web version of 15.0 and started playing with sss, got it figured out and was tweaking settings to get it right when it stopped working alltogether. I start a new project and get the same results, no matter what I do i cant get the renders looking nice anymore.

I'm on amd x2 4200+ on XP64.

Iv tried uninstalling/reinstalling and different models/projects but nothing with sss renders properly anymore.

nixie
Ok, I started a new project, made a little blob and gave it an sss group; I still get the same problems. tried different lights, different shadows but still the same garbled renders. I will post it here in the hope someone can correct me, otherwise this may be a bug to report.

Whats more annoying is that for a short while it was working...

Check that A:M is set to use just one processor and try rendering again. I don't know if this is still an issue but it was when SSS was first rolled out in A:M. Please let us know if it solves your problem. Also it would be helpful if you did a screen capture of your SSS settings and posted a jpg here.
KenH
Seems to be working here.....on the last v15 beta.
nixie
Thanks guys. Paul, yeh I had set threads to just 1, It would be nice If I could try the beta, but I'm on the new web sub.

Im currently trting a complete re install, deleted all v15 from the registry; il get back to you with a screen grab if it still doesnt work.
nixie
Ok, the re-install worked. If I can repeat the error, then I will contact hash.

I've just installed 15.0a and I'm getting similar problems with AO. These are the same problems I got with version 14.0c until I forced it to use only 1 thread (not auto). There doesn't seem to be anyway to do so this in 15.0a,
there is no selector on the global tab. Has anyone had the same problem and can suggest a solution?

What is sss?
Paul Forwood
Sub Surface Scattering.
It increases render times quite a bit but gives a lovely translucent quality to surfaces like skin or wax.
You can turn it on in surface properties but you need to make certain that you turn it on in your render properties too.
Yves Poissant developed this for A:M and you should be able to find many threads on the subject somewhere in these forums, Type sss into the search engine and see if it finds anything. (It's worse than me at searching for stuff!)

It never does. SSS is not long enough... it needs to be at least 4 characters.
Paul Forwood
Oops! That's the second time I've been told that. smile.gif

Here is the thread on SSS: Subsurface Scattering

I'v just installed 15a too and am having the problems again.

I cant seem to find the option to change the amount of render threads now either...

Im web susbscription btw, 15a.

nixie
Just to bump this, I'm getting renders like....

I'm sure this is due to render threads since I can no longer find the option to set how many in use.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
KenH
Apparently the threading option has been taken out for the moment. That could be an SSS issue.....make sure you looked at the thread above for all the solutions. If it still happens, you should report it.
nixie
Thanks Ken, I managed to find a workaround;

If anyone Is still desperate to use SSS or AO and needs to change render threads, the option is still available within the registry. I set threads to one in there, turned off auto threading and it works fine. nothing seems to have broken...

KenH
Oh...strange. You might let Hash know about that. Nice model.

Thanks for that , I'm not a confident registry editor so I'll guess I'll wait for the next update

If they are talking about what I *think* they are...then you hit 'CNTRL-ALT-DELETE' to bring up the task manager. On the 'applications' tab right click on AM and select 'Go To Process' which will hilight AM on the processes tab...right click it there and select 'Set Affinity' and you will then be able to turn on and off threads...NO?
nixie
No, but that might work? not tried it!

start - run, then type regedit, this will run the registry editor where you can look for:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Hash, Inc.,/Animation Master V15.0/General

In here are the options, specifically the general tab; set threads to one and auto threading to off, restart AM and you're go!
jpappas
Well, you should only edit the Windows Registry if you're familiar doing that and know you're way around. That said, I took a look and believe this is the key referred to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Hash, Inc.\Animation Master V15.0\General

under this look for:

Auto Threads

and

Threads

EDIT: nixie, you beat me to it!

nixie
lol, well at least people can trust me now I have backup!

Im sure this problem was just an oversight by the team and will be fixed for the next release; but this honestly works and as long as you only touch the options specified, nothing should go wrong!
