Just wondering if anyone has any good texturing and decaling tutorials- specifically about texturing organic things like humans and faces. I LOVE the decals in A:M, compared to similiar program's UV mapping and unwrapping, anyways. All I can do so far though is basically paint a picture of a face and apply it as a decal.... usually doesn't come out looking too good biggrin.gif

thanks

There's one on my site (see below, go to gallery and scroll down to the bottom of the page). It is very in depth.

Rusty, I must be blind, but I don't see a "Gallery" link on your site?

I found it- that is an intense tutorial. I have a specific question about mapping etc. i don't think i saw it in the tut so far (I think it's too noobish for your tut) but after you flatten something (a face, for example), how did you project the mesh back onto the face to see if it lined up? Just with upload it as a decal and apply it? or is there a way to apply a map? thanks.

oh yeah- and do you apply the decal to the already flattened model and then like... unflatten it somehow? or just to the normal 3d model? haha thanks again, I'm learning a ton every day but i'm still pretty noob.

You probably went to the wip site. You need to go here.

Cheers,
Rusty

PS: If you go through this tut, you will learn a lot about AM and Photoshop. There are several other really good tuts on this subject including several great video tuts by Jason Simonds. Look here and here.

If you go step by step you should see that you flatten your mesh in an ACTION (or perhaps I did it in a pose which I won't go into here because it tends to confuse the issue)!! If you flatten it in the model window... well goodbye model unless you have a backup!!! You apply the decal to the flattened mesh in the action. While the flattened mesh does not affect the mesh in your model, the applied decal does stick on your model.

I have to admit I would be nowwhere with texturing if it wasn't for both Rusty's and Will's tutorials. They really helped me get a handle on texturing.

I just bought Will's Decaling & UV Setup Tutorial recently and it's really a great resource. Before watching it, setting everything up and using the UV editor seemed really alien to me. The tutorial covers the whole process and had me itching to decal one of my characters. (Which I actually started yesterday and spent most of this morning working on.) I highly recommend it.
