Sorry it has taken me so long to get to this. Here's what i have so far.

Shouldn't the chains move in the other direction when the gear is released?
HomeSlice
Yep. I tried moving the chain down to the bottom of the drum so it would be "right", but the chain is just a long straight line and the part that you are not supposed to see bacame visible in the frame. Instead of moving everything so you see just the part you are supposed to see, I figured I would let Robcat decide what to do.

Hi Holmes,

A tricky shot which poses issues we don't typically run into in character animation, but you've almost got it. Here are some notes...

Boy, I'm glad I don't have to crank that thing to lift the drawbridge.

Hi Holmes, that looks good. Here are a few notes and I'll have a new shot coming your way.

Yeah, a few more gears might have been helpful. But maybe the whole contraption is counterbalanced in some way.

Now with chains wrapped around the thing-a-ma-jig. I've turned off the reflectivity on the doors so we wouldn't see the off-screen tinman standing there like a post.

Three attempts at making the chains look like they are going fast:
