Here are a couple of sneak previews of a feature I've been working on: fluids. (the two movies below are from testing different settings)
Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentIt's still in the early phase of development, but it's already looking like water.

Very cool!

Now tell me about render times.

The bouncing droplets are a bit odd, but it looks quite promising! I look forward to seeing this develop.

WHU????
I never thought I'd see the day!
Thats FANTASTIC! The samples and the NEWS!!!
Can you give us any more to further 'whett' our collective whistles??? How about info... is it particle based? Is it render-intensive?(I imagine it is with the caustics and all...)
And WHO are you??? Are you a Hash-programmer or independent? Steve or Stu Wooster?
I'm HYPED!!!

I believe it is based on blobbies, but Steve has obviously made a few modifications.

He is Steve Wooster (aka Stevie). He is the new Intern at Hash. He lives in Martin's house and only sees the light of day when he is able to sneak out. His post was obviously made during one of those times ... before he was discovered and thrown back into the basement.

just kidding...

Nice to meet Mr. Wooster! You are my new HERO (next to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Barry Bonds and Ellen Pompei)
Well...if it's based on 'blobbies'...I guess that would mean a big 'HELL-FREAKIN-YES' to outlandish render times. TELL ME I'm wrong...
please?

The first time fluids were introduced in Beta 6, I made a
post about my test of render times. I don't know if they work any better in the latest revision.

OK- just read that thread...thanks Julian! So- I guess what's new since that thread is that you can now set the transparency/density/refraction/speculaity/ of the blobbies...ALL of which are additional rendertime whores...
Well- maybe by the time V15 comes to be...computers will be much faster....and man will have walked on the MOON!
BTW---Does the new V14.0 feature of 'threaded' rendering work yet?

OHNO! Vern!
QUICK! Somebody send a box of doughnuts-milk--a pack of pall malls---some pillows---naked pictures of Rachael Ray-----and the machine that goes 'ping' over to his house IMMEDIATELY!
I think he is suffering from 'Cool New Feature-itis'...and he's got it BAD!

Holy cow!
There are naked pictures of Rachael Ray??!!
Seriously though...
I'm feeling much better now. So I get the impression this new feature is sort of like a "modified blobbies" type thing? I've often wondered if blobbies could be used for liquids.
This is the "last thing" left for AM in my opinion. There really isn't ANY other "major" type feature in any program that isn't covered in AM. Pretty cool.
The "main" feature list in my head was:
Hair
Cloth
Object collisions (Newton Physics)
Displacement mapping (the "new" kind)
SSS (I think Yves is working on that. Haven't been keeping track)
And now... liquid.
These were like... all the features "newbies" asked about first.
"How do I do like a flowing cape on like this big hairy woman made of sort of green jade bouncing of the wall? It's a two hour epic feature film and I plan to get it done this summer before I go back to school."
After AM v15 comes out...
"How do I do a flowing cape on a big hairy woman made of green jade bouncing off the wall and falling into a swimming pool? It's a 5 minute short animation for film school this semester."
p.s. I don't have any specific attraction to or opinions about big hairy women. It was just an example.

What about the 'make look cool' button, like they have at Pixar?
I'm bored...I actually googled Rachael Ray naked...

I've noticed other software using "fluid" simulations for things like smoke or billowing fire which are really gases but I guess have many behaviours similar to liquids. I wonder if this could be used in a like way for cases where sprite smoke and fire won't do?

That's the problem for artist working in 3D... you have to wait for someone else to make something possible. In 2D you "just" draw it.
I once worked with an animator who also had a career as a supervisor in an animation factory in China. He claimed the best animators were in China; they could draw anything he said. "if you need a green zombie with three eyes and four arms tumbling off a cliff wearing a cape and shooting fire out of his mouth... they can draw that."

Liquid dynamics are all very well and good, but personally, I'd like to see
gas dynamics -- particularly self-shadowing clouds and smoke. There are limits to how well you can fake it with sprites.
(Edit: I wrote this before I saw Robert's post above.)

Do you know what is the best? That noone is rising the presure on him

"Make me a make cool button..."
"Coolest Thing ever!"
"Oh, while you at water... just make something for gas too, will you?"

Lets go step by step folks...
Water at first, after that to the moon

There's a new version of the
fluid tutorial for today's new V15 alpha1 release.
A few improvements have been made to fluid physics... for example, collisions are now smoother and less jittery.
Also, here's a couple of new videos of slime and water respectively.

That's pretty sharp looking!
Is there any way to make the small droplets "wetter"? Right now a small droplet on a surface is very beadlike.
