I'm not certain how far I will get with this project but, as I started researching Atlantis a couple of weeks ago, I thought that I would post what I have to date and add to it if I get the chance.

I started by reading a translation of Plato's dialogue of Critias, in which a description is given by Critias to Socrates of a land, beyond the Pillars of Herecles, which had been populated by a noble people who it was said were decended from a marriage between Poseidon and an earth-born woman, Cleito. Poseidon kept Cleito isolated from the world by striking the ground and causing the little mountain where she lived to become encircled by rings of land and water. It is said that Cleito bore 10 children for Poseidon, five sets of male twins, and the first was named Atlas. These lands were named in honour of Atlas and were called, Atlantis. The ten children were given jurisdiction over the ten kingdoms of Atlantis and overall authority rested with Atlas, who was given Cleito's island and the surrounding country as his kingdom. This ringed citadel was adorned with temples to Poseidon and Cleito and many statues honouring the 10 kings and their decendants. As time passed and generation after generation married and had children with earth-born common folk the land became populated and the noble blood of the Gods became diluted more and more with lowly human blood. Well, you know what's going to happen, don't you. wink.gif

The people of Atlantis were masters of the seas and travelled far and wide. Other cultures traded with them and held them in high esteme but it was seen that they became more and more debased, obsessed with wealth and ego. Poseidon became angry, so the tale goes, and finally destroyed the island of Atlantis, sinking it and it's people beneath the waves. (Okay, that is a very simple interpretation of the Critias dialogue but it gives you the rough outline).

For this image I am going to attempt to model just a little piece of Atlantis but in order to get a clearer idea of the dimensions of the citadel and the surrounding plains I modelled a rough model of this small area at 1/100th scale. (1%). Here is a really rough fly through of the channel and the walled plain with the little island of Cleito at it's centre. No architecture or landscaping in this. Just simple proxy models to get an idea of the scale.

I hope to update this thread with a regular WIP but we'll just have to see.

Reminds me of the death star trench...

"No good, I can't maneuver!"
"Stay on target"
"we're too close"
"Stay on target"
"Loosen up!"
"hey look! A mermaid!"

Good lord! I am not a Star Wars fanatic... why are these things stuck in my head!! I could use that space for some JavaScript, dangit.

I like the idea of the fly through to get perspective on the larger picture.
I thought about this when I started my lost world project. It was so "big" I didn't think one image would do it justice. Since we have some more time with this I was thinking of doing more than one image (from different angles, close ups etc.) or possibly a fly through animation.

Heh. Yeah, that's a shakey flight path isn't it? Thanks, Vern!

Thanks, Robert! Just A:M fog. That image is just a screen grab of the movie. The final image will be from the perspective of a trireme in the inner harbour, (I think).wink.gif

Beautiful start, Paul! Thanks for the awesome fly-by (even if the pilot lost a bit of control of his aircraft for a moment tongue.gif). It really helped to give it a sense of scale. It's BLOODY HUGE! You're already off to an fantastic start. I look forward to an update biggrin.gif.

That's way cool Paul! It's very epic...you know...I think you should do two entries: a close-up and a distance shot wink.gif

Good luck and nice start!

Thanks for the kind words, folks! smile.gif Was it really 6 1/2 months ago? blink.gif
I never got back to this project but as I was going through some of my folders from the past year I noticed that I had a slight update on the previous image. I don't know if I will ever get back to this but here is an image and rough fly-through of the way it was left:
