When I just installed the new WEB plugin over the old one, All I saw when I viewed the demos on the Hash website was a black screen with HAMR controls. But when I uninstalled it, then installed the new version, all is well. Maybe you could put a notice in the imstallation dialog box to tell the user to uninstall the old version before installing the new version.
WillP
You shouldn't need to uninstall, but you should have all your explorer windows closed.

I'll look into having the installer check for running processes.
KenH
It worked fine without uninstalling for me.

I still get the WebHAMR freeze when I try and 'activate the control'... 8-(

I'll try it on my wife's computer and one of my other computers to see if it makes a difference.

In this WebHAMR alpha 2 release, I enabled a diagnostic log file to be rewritten each time WebHAMR or HAMRViewer is executed. It might help me determine just what is going wrong on your system if you would submit a report and attach the log file to the report. The file is located in your WebHAMR directory called HAMR.log and is typically in the /Program Files/Hash Inc/WebHAMR directory. Try to execute WebHAMR up until it locks up and then attach the log file to the report. This will be the first try at using the log to diagnose a problem but hopefully it will help. The HAMRViewer log is also called HAMR.log but is in the /Program Files/Hash Inc/HAMRViewer directory. These files are just text files so you can look in the file if you want and see if you can tell anything.

Here is the log... I tried the KeeKat demo... but it dies the same way on all the Hash WebHAMR demos.

Hope that helps explain it... although I didn't see anything that jumped up and shouted 'I'M BROKE!' tongue.gif

I've worked on this for several hours today but still can't figure out what might be happening on your system. Most of the log looks normal, but it does appear as if the ActiveX control was activated twice and on the second activation the main toolbar failed to load.

I know I keep asking for more info, but could you explain exactly the steps that you took prior to sending the log file? I.E., after downloading the file, did WebHAMR have the yellow message on screen that says to "Press ENTER or SPACEBAR to activate and use control"? And which did you these two did you do, or did you click somewhere in the WebHAMR window? Did you click on the IE refresh icon (or press F5) before exiting WebHAMR? I'm trying to determine the significance of the second activation of WebHAMR.

Thanks,

Okay, here's the normal steps I take.

1. Click on a WebHAMR demo link.

2. Wait for the download to complete and the download bar to disappear.

3. I left-click on the WebHAMR window once to activate it and the download window re-appears. This leaves all the controls unavailable to me and WebHAMR appears to freeze. (I can drag the re-appeared download bar around and it leaves a 'trail' like WebHAMR is not refreshing the screen behind it.

At that point I simply close the IE window, because I can't do anything with WebHAMR.

EDIT: I have tried the space bar in place of the 'left-click' to activate the control, to only have it affected the same way.

Okay, based on the log file and the steps you used above and the behavior, I think I now know what is causing this problem. I believe it is the version of Internet Explorer that you are using. Earlier in the year Microsoft released a version of IE quickly after losing a patent lawsuit and that version changed how ActiveX controls activated. The problem with this release was that it broke quite a few ActiveX based programs, including WebHAMR. The symptoms of this version were that IE would try to activate the ActiveX control twice but would not result in complete initialization the second time (when you click on the ActiveX window) and thus the program would not work correctly. I had rejected this as a problem on your system based on the IE version that you mentioned earlier since it is the same as the version I'm running. But, I just looked on one of my computers that hasn't been turned on or updated in several months and it has the same IE version, so apparently MS does not update the version number with every release. MS silently released a fix to the faulty version of IE some time after releasing the faulty version.

I'm fairly confident that this is the problem. I'm hoping you can update IE to the latest version and try WebHAMR again. I think you may have to go through the Windows XP update procedure to get the latest IE 6 update (via Control Panel, Windows Update). Let us know the results.

Yep, that was it Ken!

Once I let microsoft update do it's thing I get the little text that says 'press the space bar or enter to activate control'.

Now it works just fine.

Thanks!
KenH
Perhaps a warning to update to the latest IE somewhere obvious is in order......
dawgking

I got the black screen too when I downloaded a demo. I hit the browser back botton then the forward button and all is good
