Apparently these are actual stereoscopic images taken while Nightmare was in production, not the artificial 3D that is being created for the re-release later this year.

Brings me right back to the time when I was working in Cardiff for the UK premier of Nightmare at the International Animation Festival. I tried to stop a screffy looking Tim Burton from going in because he didnt have a ticket

I think one reason these work well is that there are no fairly few "window violations"

As soon as something at the edge of an image tries to be in front of the frame ("the window") it ruins the 3D effect.

I think that's because our brain interprets the overlapping of objects as a more significant depth cue than the left-right parallax information.
