I think it's a first for me too and, oops, I see my own wording is used in the description. Looks like I'll have to be a bit more.......professional.

Thank you, Bob Croucher! I can now switch Expressions on and off during an animation. It works like a charm.

Keep up the good work, everybody!

Sincerely,

Carl Raillard

When will the Mac OS X version be available? The link says the file isn't available... sad.gif

All the mac guys are on the road doing tradeshows. As soon as they get a solid internet connection they should be able to get the installer updated and built. Hang tight.

Ah, nuts! It doesn't work quite right, yet. Expression Enforcement keys are not saved in Pose Relationships. I've already filed a report.

Fortunately I have a nifty workaround. I'd like to share it. Bob Croucher taught me a neat trick:
Create a new On/Off Pose. It should have a Relationship ... but there should be nothing going on inside the Relationship. The sole purpose of this pose (let's call it Pose1) is to serve as a switch.

Next, open your regular old default pose Relationship. This is the pose that's always on when you animate your character. In this Relationship you should apply an Expression on whatever parameter you wish to control, but you should begin with an "if" function.

The Expression should be of this form:

if ( ..|..|..|..|Pose1 > 0, blah bla, doyertrickshere, yadda yadda )

What this will do is: Whenever Pose1 is turned ON, the Expression magically springs to life. And you can turn the Expression off whenever you wish by switching Pose 1 OFF. cool.gif

Sincerely,

Carl Raillard

What the heck are you up to with this stuff!

Sounds like you are really putting some nifty stuff together.

No kidding!

Turning Expressions On and Off via Poses... very very nice. smile.gif
Perhaps this is also impemented in the HAMR Properties?

I wish I knew, Mike! Right now I'm simply trying to learn more about Expressions. I know I want the ability to animate with them. So being able to turn them on and off easily is important to me.

This afternoon I tried an experiment. In an Action file, I applied the following Expression on a bone's X scale transform parameter:
If(..|Y>100%,100%)
Whereupon the program automatically edits this down to this:
If(..|Y>1,1).

Then, I gingerly edited the expression, substituting the letter Y with the letter X instead, like so:
If(..|X>1,1).
The program automatically edits this down to this:
If(>1,1)

I peformed a similar ritual, adding and editing two additional Expressions on the Y and the Z scale parameters. So the scale factor of all three dimensions are now set to return down to 100% if the bone is ever scaled above 100%. This trio of Expressions act as a kind of limiting constraint on the scale of the bone.

And for a moment it actually works! I've created a Scale Limit constraint. This is something that Smudge said she wanted, and I've felt the need for it, too. It's useful for mimicing muscle distention. You want the thing to stretch, but not to keep on stretching.

But these Expressions do not survive a project save/close/reopen. And, to save my life, I don't know if that's Animation Master's fault. It's possible the program is working flawlessly, and I'm just trying to get it to do something that it was never designed to do. I'm hesitant to file a report because of my lack of knowledge, here. I'm still trying to get a handle on what Expressions can really do.

Sincerely,

Carl Raillard

PS: Rodney? What are HAMR Properties?

No! No!

I think ALL those bug fix descriptions should be in "layman's" terms... Your description is much clearer and easier to understand than some techno mumbo jumbo those anal retentive programmers use...
