I've finally gotten around to starting this. Or at least starting to look at getting started. I'll be posting pictures as a go along and doing my best to explain my process for doing hair, including any mistakes along the way. His hair is fairly complicated so it should make a good tutorial. Anyway, here's how he looks so far...

Sorry I didn't get any further on this last night, I' ve just been too tired lately to do much after work, it's been kicking my butt lately. Hopefully I'll get going tonight.

Ok, so the follow along aspect didn't work out too well. I've already finished the hair as you can see. I've taken a whole bunch of screen captures along the way that I just need to clean up now for the tutorial aspect. His hair could use a little bit of tuning but I think this is good enough for now. I'll hopefully have the tutorial up by today and if not definately tomorrow. Next up for a haircut is Green Monkey...

Looks good! But is it using Muhair? It doesn't seem as "feathery" as previous examples you posted. Sort of like the ends of the hairs are too thick. Maybe it's the lighting.
Can't wait to see green monkey done! When he is, I'll transpose Mrs Yoops face on to it for her monkey model.

Yeah, it's using muhHair. I've probably got things a little too dark, especially the specular color. I was trying to get away from being so shiny but I think I went too far. Easily fixed though. It could also be that I've got the desnity up too high. Anyway, I'll probably tweak it a little more later on. I just spent too many hours yesterday working on him and I was sick of looking at him smile.gif

Hey...COOL! A self-portrait?

I missed the toot... I see in the first pictures, the hair is modelled...as in geometry... and then somewhere along the way it turned into particle hair... is the geometry still there controlling the shape or something?

KenH
Yes....much more body to it. Nicely done. I'm curious whether you have a taper on the hair (each individual strand...thickness is 0 at 100%). If not, I wonder would it make much difference?

Just brows and lashes left...

Crap, I knew I forgot something. I don't plan to do the lashes with particle hair, I personally don't think it works very well. I'm also not a big fan of tapering anymore. I used to always do it but for human it just doesn't make sense. I'm using it a bit on the green monkey's body fur but only because the hair doesn't support any sort of clumping right now and tapering will simluate that. If you think the hair is too thick maybe I should make it thinner...thoughts?

Sorry, still haven't gotten around to the tut yet, I've got too much going right now. But, to answer your question, the geometry is gone. The hair shape was done by manually dragging the controls splines around (and let me tell you, it wasn't fun).

Yes, I did notice the hair being thick. It seems "stringy". But then if it's made thinner, it'll probably need to be denser and that means longer render times. Also, this is a very close up and static shot. It probably won't be noticed in motion.
