Hello,

Just want to share my free 3d texture collection with everyone. I am always updating my free 3d textures and adding new categories so make sure to check back.

Check out the free 3d textures .
Rodney
This looks a little suspicsious at first but this site does indeed have free textures.
No adverse effects noted... no popups... just free texures.

Plants, grass, rocks and dirt.

I believe they are supplied by Dustin Senos.
Did I get that right?

Thanks!
jon
this is amateurish link baiting for google's benefit, not our own.

the photos on the page may be good source materials for textures, they're not usable textures... 3d or otherwise.

the folks at 3d.sk have much better free 3d textures than this fellow supposedly offering free 3d textures. as a matter of fact, the free 3d textures at 3d.sk are the best free 3d textures i've ever seen. ' ' )

What jon said.

So is this an automatic posting?
Seems pretty sophisticated if it is.
Hard to imagine it could be.

Dustin? You out there?
Are you a spambot?

Not you Dustin... the other Dustin.

Dustin Senos is the name related to the textures.

i could only wish i had a spam bot that tech.

how could those textures not be useable? they aren't seamless repeating perfect textures, but they work pretty good as starting points for textures and for reference photos.

no pop ups or anything... bandwidth paid for myself. just trying to share the goods.

(peep the homepage. I've done 3d in the past so i know whats good and bad for textures)

"this is amateurish link baiting for google's benefit, not our own."

free textures? google doesnt care much about those
trajcedrv
I have visited the site and I could think od some uses for those textures... Photos are of nice quality and they are free... definitely woth a try...
heyvern
Uh...

Yeah... 3 links to the same place in one message... uh...

Google may not care about it specifically... but search engines in general look for links in other places for "weighting" the search results.

If for example Googles "bots" find a BUNCH OF LINKS to that site... on other sites... they will push the results up.

The more clicks he gets from a search on TEXTURES the more money from the sponsored links at the top of the page.

Don't try to fool us bud... I find it a pain in the butt to put ONE link in my posts here... 3 links... 3 times... in 3 sentences... yeah right...

Oh by the way... any moron with two brain cells and a cheap digital camera can take a bunch of photos in the back yard and stick 'em up on the web... sheesh.... takes all of 10 minutes.

... sing together now...

Spam spam spam spam.... spam spam spam spam....

heyvern,

I think someone needs to calm down. To quote you:

"If for example Googles "bots" find a BUNCH OF LINKS to that site... on other sites... they will push the results up."

No shit man... why do you have links (which don't work - rather funny) in your signature on every single one of your 3,000 posts? The more google likes my site, the more people come to it and the more free textures I give away, hence the point.

"Don't try to fool us bud... I find it a pain in the butt to put ONE link in my posts here... 3 links... 3 times... in 3 sentences... yeah right..."

I'm sorry if you find it really time consuming to type in the code for a link. I would hope you spend the time you save for other things then flaming peoples work.

"Oh by the way... any moron with two brain cells and a cheap digital camera can take a bunch of photos in the back yard and stick 'em up on the web... sheesh.... takes all of 10 minutes."

I am offering free textures. Guess what heyvern? The amount of money I make on ads DOESNT PAY FOR THE SERVER! My Gosh! Can it be?

Why do you sit here and call me a Moron? If you don’t like the textures, I'd hope you would leave the page. The person above you finds them useful. Cheap camera or not (which it's not) I went through the effort to put textures online at my own expense, take them or leave them, but please be mature enough to leave out personal insults. (10 minutes is a bit of a stretch… I did code the php myself)

It's not like I don’t know what I’m talking about either. I am a professional graphic artist, I have a diploma in 3d animation and I have been featured all over the web. I was in the WickedRGB book and featured on the softimage website... pretty sure any moron can't do that...
heyvern
It's still spam.

You post links on a 3D forum for free textures to boost your stats. That's called spam.

Despite what you or anyone says... those pictures took all of 20 miinutes... I bet the time stamps on them are the same day... the same hour.

If you want to post free textures... take something interesting... rusted metal... flaking paint... or at least have a variety. Good grief... the last two rows were from the same dang tree! Did you go to a garden center?

... plants?... 3d textures? Yeah... I don't think so. I liked the dirt images. Those are really hard to find.

My 6 year old nephew can take pictures of trees in the back yard.

Thanks for the heads up on my site being down. It went down yesterday and it was suppose to have been fixed already. Very annoying.

Is every link spam then? the key part there is the FREE part. Pretty sure spam wouldnt be a issue if people were emailing / sending actual free stuff all day long.

Despite what you or anyone says
Everone in the entire world but you? Ever thought you might be wrong?

... plants?... 3d textures? Yeah... I don't think so.
3D Total Tutorial
"Now, the plants...
You won't find plants on the TotalTexture CDs but it's an important part of the scene.
I searched the web and found many nice images of grass and plants. In winter (I'm writing this in december) it's hard to take photos of green plants, you see.
That was the simple part.
Unfortunately they had no alpha maps so that was my job."

looks like someone is looking for plants.

My 6 year old nephew can take pictures of trees in the back yard.
You bet he can! But has he paid for and made a website to give them away online?

I have tons more. Id put them up but I was catchin the drift here that they weren't wanted?

There is a bunch of free textures web sites around these days. One thing that strikes me though is that they are all poorly prepared for doing 3D texturing work. And this particular set of free textures is no exception. No wonder they are free.

However, calling that one "free 3D texture" is a little stretch of imagination to say the least. "free photos", definitively. "free textures", maybe. But "free 3D textures", no way. A true 3D texture should be ready to use as a 3D texture. Those are very far from being ready. They could be used as background textures for a muultimedia product, a video or a web page although even for that type of application, they would require extensive manipulations.

A true set of 3D textures should be tileable / seamless and be without directional lighting / shadows. Plus it should be accompanied at least by a bump map and an alpha map is applicable. In other words, to be qualified as "3D textures" the files should have been processed to get the above required properties. Just proposing simple photos as "3D textures" is an abuse of language. Making true 3D textures takes time, experience and skills. Much more time, skills and experience than pressing on the camera shutter.

If I had to rate the 4 free texture sites that were posted recently, I would honestly have to rate that one as the lowest of the 4.
free_textures
If you dont like my textures. Don't go. They are free. Take them or leave them.
heyvern
Free textures,

Obviously... don't go... it is a choice. The point is whether this qualifies as spam.

I honestly don't beleive you intentions are sincere.

Here is my theory... get a site... slap up some paid ads. Go outside... take a bunch of quick pictures. Put them up on said site. Call the page "Free Textures"....

... go to a bunch of 3D software forums... log on. Post a topic called "Free 3D textures". Wait for a few extra bucks.

It is just like people who buy junk and sell it on eBay. There is always someone who ends up buying it or clicking on it.

If everyone was smart enough NOT to click on spam... the spammers wouldn't have a job anymore. The world is full of idiots.

This is not a question of some one in a million persons use of your photos... it is a question of intentionally misleading people to gain some monetary compensation.

MAN! I should put ads on my ARM site... I don't make a dime off that thing... it just makes me... a bit sad to do it... I might end up like you... posting about "free tutorials" to get my stats up.

Hey Vern,

I was wondering for a few days why we get so many links to free textures recently. You made it all clear. You are right. this is a new form of spam that we need to be aware of.

For instance, I've been trying to download some of the textures from this "Free Texture" site called psicosonic that Xtaz posted a few days ago. I was wondering why, more than half of my atemps to download a texture fails because the server just stops sending the data after a while. Oftentime after 95% or even 98% of the download is complete. So I retry. Sometimes several times before I can actually get the texture. I wrote the guys at the site about that (Man, they must have laughed at me like mad).

Now I know why. They also have google advertizing on their site and on all their pages. What a coincidence. And I guess, because of that, they are clearly not interested in seeing us leave as soon as possible and they are very interested in seeing us come back as often as possible, thus the failed downloads. Not only are they not inerested in fixing that but it seems to be a nice feature to implement in a web site that tries to live from posted advertizements.

Thanks for your insight.
heyvern
Education is the best weapon against spam.

I hope I didn't imply you weren't smart enough to avoid spam!

We all get nailed... and they are getting freakin smart. No more... unattended messages. These guys post AND REPLY in forums to their spam just to give an impression of... legitamacy. Most forum spammers are "bots" of course. This guy... he is probably not a bot... and not very good in my opinion.

I think they... expect the lowest common denomonator... they play on people's general good nature and benefit of the doubt.

I especially like his user name... Free Textures... nothing left to the imagination there.

I am on another forum that doesn't have the spam blocking like this one does... they are getting SLAMMED! They have a dozen moderators in different time zones and still can't delete it fast enough.

The new thing I like now... are the jokes. Some of these forum spammers include a very funny (if off color) joke before their links.

I enjoy those... then I don't click the link... so there!... I get the joke for free and they get nothing in return.

At least "Free Textures" was sort of on topic... usually it is xanaax or phentermine... or mp3 downloads.

wink.gif

RULE OF THUMB!

If a post has the same link... 3 OR MORE TIMES in a short statement and they go to the extra effort of putting the link inside text (so the address is hidden from direct view)... it is ALWAYS spam.

Normal people don't put the link in 3 times. Too much work. One is enough anyway.

-vern
free_textures
correct me if im wrong here: my site is spam in your guys eyes because I have ads on it?

Its free textures... for use for 3d applications, photoshop whatever. Posted on a forum that is a 3D related website and its spam? If i was posting for something off topic... yes thats spam.

People use my textures. Guess what? i can track the downloads!

The ratio of clicks on my ads to clicks on my textures doesnt even compaire. I have recieved many emails thanking me for the textures.

You guys need to wake up. I think the issue here, is you don't feel my textures are quality enough for your liking. If I had hundreds of textures, would it count as spam? you are compairing apples to oranges.
NancyGormezano
Perhaps if you posted some models/images that you've created using A:M with your textures - it might help sell your wares as well as change the tone of this thread.

Not using A:M, but 3d software none the less:

Nice models, but didn't see any textures (grass, dirt, etc).

You do own a copy of A:M ? You have used it?
free_textures
The white car has a dirt texture on it, aswell as a brick texture.

I haven't used A:M but... textures arent application specific.
heyvern
Your goal is NOT to provide textures.

Your main goal is to get your stats on search engines higher.

There is a difference. You intentions are not... "on topic".

There was an old mail order "scam". You bought this "pamphlet" from the back of magazines to learn how to get rich selling stuff through mail order.

The basic concept was to slap together a crappy photocopied useless pamphlet on... "how to do something" and sell it for a few bucks. Usually what your were told to sell... was more booklets on how to make money selling stuff through mail order.

This... is no different. The main intention of your site is not to give away free textures. Regardless of downloads or hits... you didn't spend anytime at all on the images. There are suckers born everyday. Of course you have downloads.

This is considered spam... because it's primary goal is not to provide a useful product... but to gain you points for more ads.

If you were really interested in HELPING 3D artists... you would have spent more than 20 minutes with those images.

Honestly... how long did it take to take those pictures? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? An hour?

Did you shoot them all on the same day in the same spot? Really.

That is the definition of spam. the photos were an afterthought to what you could gain from HITS and search engine bots. You had to have "something" on the page... shoot a few images.

Doesn't matter if... one in a thousand found some minor use for those images. That is what spam is all about... they get less than.... .0001% return on a bazillion emails... they make money... no effort. Send out a billion emails... get one person to respond... you justify annoying everyone else.

Also.. by... misleading search engines and driving your stats up with links you post in other locations... you royally SCREW UP legitimate searches for REAL content. If you could, you would want to be higher in the results... not because your content is good... but because your site would be more valuble as an ad revenue generator.

Still spam. It was yesterday. Still is today.

To make it NOT spam... take all the ads off of your site. Then... not spam... but then... you wouldn't even put that site up without the ads.

The only reason for the site is for the ads.

EDIT:
There is no link on the original "textures" page for your actual artistic endeavors.... so... your intention was for that one page to get hits. Otherwise you would have links to the rest of that site on the textures page. I didn't even know you had any thing else there.

-vern
free_textures
actually... my sites been up for a long time with textures, but bandwidth costs were too high, hence the ads.

my site in 2004

To quote myself:

- -- March 15th 2004 : 2:25am -- --

I'm very happy with the amount of traffic to my site lately! wow its way more then ive ever expected. I hope people that browse here find the textures at least helpful. Thanks so much for checking out the site. I'm going to post quite a few more textures soon here, I just need to go snap some off. I'm sorry quite a few are blurry at full size... im not sure what is up with my camera, maybe it finds it hard to keep focus when pointing down, who knows. Ill work on that. I'm also starting production on a short animation mentioned below that has been put on the back burner. Its a group of five of us that i go to school with who are working on it. I'm the production manager and going to be texturing allot of it. Stay tuned for more info on that, and possibly a mini site showing our progress.

- -- May 8th 2004 : 4:30pm -- --
Well the hits are continuing to come to the site, with the textures page being the second most popular, so hopefully people are finding it helpful. If you have used any of my textures, please let me know, send me an email or sign the guestbook, I would love to see the work done. I'm adding more textures today, some rust shots, a few ground covers and a example of scratched plastic. I am now officially working at a company called "Cool School" developing online learning software. I'm doing photoshop and 3d work. I am still open for freelance work and other job offers as well. I'm also archiving the Main page because its getting way to large and will start to slow things down.

I was wondering for a few days why we get so many links to free textures recently. You made it all clear. You are right. this is a new form of spam that we need to be aware of.

on that note. i quit, you guys can argue more about my site. all you are inturn doing is increasing my traffic.

so cheers for that,

dustin
LurkerAbove
Just to be fair, and I'm not saying this isn't spam, you need to get thousands and thousands of hits to make any money off of google adsense -- at least from my understanding.

The techniques for generating those hits are much more sophisticated than getting someone to try and download repeatedly.

I realize this might hurt an ego or two, but I don't think this is just spam, but perhaps just poor quality. If I was really gonna spambot, I'd put the links in like 30 times instead of three. Perhaps there's a trick to using only three I don't understand? (does it avoid automatic filters)

Anyway, if free_textures is *really* interested in providing good, free textures, he'd take what ypoissant is posting to heart. Its my understanding he has *lots* of experience in what makes a useful texture -- for not just A:M but a variety of 3d programs.

And you *do* want to provide a quality product, don't you?
