Finally finished Tin Servant's hair. Still need to give him some particle eyebrows but that shouldn't take too long. Overall he wasn't too bad, he has probably the simplest hairstyle of any of the TWO characters. Next up will be Nick Chopper...let me know what you think.

I think it's awesome. Tin Servant's got a heck of a cowlick... Two even.

veddy charming, my good sir
Rodney
Very nice!

Can't wait to see it in animated action. smile.gif

BTW - That looks quite a bit like 'Violet Hair'.
KenH
Looks great. I have to say it's much better than woots. Maybe it's the color....woot's seems sort of dead and purple.
On a side note, I hope servants skin color is going to be toned down abit. Is he Indian? And his lip bump maps....
Zaryin
That hair is awesome. I wish you would make a tut. I can't get my hair to look nearly as good as that.

I agree with Ken about the texture. Seems a little overboard.
zandoriastudios
Nice Hair!!!

Thanks Guys!

Since I did Woot's hair too and I was pretty happy with it can you maybe show me what you mean? It's possible the hair shaders aren't working for you as it has happened to others and that would explain the "dead" look. Not sure why Woot's hair would look purple though since I made it brown. Could you post a rendering? If it's something else I'd like to fix it. I agree about Tin Servant's skin color. I think he looks kind of like a wrinkled up George Hamilton with that orange skin tone. It's not a bad texturing job, it could just use some tuning up. Not sure who worked on the textures for him.

I'm planning to do a tutorial while I work on Nick Chopper's hair. I thought about doing one for Tin Servant but decided his hair was actually too simple.

That tut would be sweet and timely, since I am working on my first human character and have no clue as to hair. Nicely done, Sir.
KenH
Here's what I'm getting. I think it must be something to do with the shader on my machine as there's no shadows. The color seems better now. Maybe the hair could be abit thicker?
luckbat
Ken, do you have "Shaders = ON" in your render settings?
cosmonaut
I just did a quick test with Woot's hair, here's how it should look. I think Luckbat's right, you don't have shaders enabled in your rendering properties.

Woots hair is lovely as well - but his hair & cap should be different colors - How about a nice golden red-haired Irish boy with freckles look for Woot (& of course to humor Ken as well)

Nancy, that's a great idea! I wonder if Kevin would let you do that? (He did Woot's texturing.) Woot would look younger and less ephemeral if he had freckles and red hair.

Patason Brooks textured Tin Servant... My guess (having never seen Patason but knowing that he lives in Jamaica) is that to his thinking, that skin color is fine. Works for me if it works for him. Who says everyone in Oz comes from Western Europe?
DeeJay
The new hair looks absolutely great!! Good job!

*dream-modus on*
And how much greater would the models look if they'd have some sort of sss effect on their skin ...
*dream-modus off*

@Martin
maybe some people have political corectness issues with an indian playing the servant in this movie ... ;-)
mtpeak2
I think the tin servant just has a killer tan from polishing the tin garden. tongue.gif

Great hair, Kevin.
KenH
Yes, I assume that was the problem as shaders was set to off. I don't know if the settings inside the "shaders" option are right though but I'm not going to be doing hair any time soon. I'll wait for that tutorial before I do any!

I'll be interested to see if Woot's hat casts a shadow on his hair. I don't notice it in the picture....where the hair looks great btw (maybe the hairline is funny looking).

Are the characters getting hair eye lashes?

And Nancy, that wouldn't humor me....I hate Irish stereotypes! But I agree he might look good with red hair and especially freckles.

Woot's texturing wasn't done by a long shot so if Nancy or someone else wants to take over they are more than welcome. I would've liked to have finished him but doing hair and evetually lighting will keep me pretty darned busy for the forseeable future...

Good point...

His hat will casts shadows onto the hair just fine, his head is tilted back towards the light, which is why you don't see any shadows. I agree the hairline is a little funny looking but I haven't figured out a way to make it look better yet. I don't think the characters need particle hair for eyelashed, that would actually be too difficult, some textured patches should work fine (I agree the characters do need those).
Rodney
/me looks at Wookie Hair in yonder avatar... then at Woot's hair.

Unless we are going with classic Oz coloring (purple right?) reddish/reddish brown would look nice.
It'd complement/contrast nicely with the color of his hat/leathers. Maybe just orangish brown highlights would do the trick?

Adding that hair image on the scalp would help get away from that stitched in toy hair look right?

Whatever might be said about potential improvement that is one fine rendering of Woot.

Ken - I definitely apologize for any stereotyping, I was trying to be funny. I was being insensitive. sad.gif

The reality is I find red-hair absolutely stunning. And someone else in my house must also, as for years, empty Clairol & L'Oreal hair-coloring boxes (with labels like Red Hot Hoochie Mama & Last Chance Carmelian) have mysteriously shown up about every 6 weeks in my garbage bins. I don't know how they get there...

As for the servants coloring, I don't think it's a matter of ethnicity. I think the issue might be that the style of his coloring is saturated, intense, primary. Some of the other characters appear muted, desaturated, toned down.

Some tweaking of coloring & intensity for all characters (and sets) would be necessary to get a consistent overall style.

Kevin - sure - I'd take a crack at Woot (and I would add eyelashes to him as well).

Not sure i follow the "hair image on the scalp" idea, can you elaborate?

Go for it! I agree about the color/style, we definately lack consistency right now. I noticed that Marcel was adding a nice skin bump to Nimmie Amee. We probably should do that to all of the human characters.

I think Rodney was meaning that a decal could be added to the scalp to camouflage the hairline - I'll try that as well.

As for skin bumps on young children and love-interest ladies - not so sure - other characters - definitely yes.

The bumpier, the better to build character. Smoothness & purity of skin is what helps communicate youth & attractiveness. And of course we're talking style again.

Some of the characters are great caricatures - while others are tending towards realism - a mish mash of style. I personally would prefer to see it kept in the style of caricature.

This is basically a straight on image taken of the hair standing straight up and then use that image as a decal on the geometry under the procedural hair.

Its a trick often used to turn what might look like 10 hairs into 100s if not 1000s of hair follicles.

I believe there is a demo of this technique in the Hair Tech Talk.
There definitely is an example on one of the early Anzovin CDs.

Hear Hear. Realism is nice... but the art of storytelling is in the caricture. smile.gif

I wasn't humored, but nor was I in any way bothered. I guess I should have added a smilie.

The ethnic slave also occured to me as a bit tasteless. I agree it's not a bad texture....just a different style.

I too have been playing with hair and have learned a great deal. I've been using my butthead model to experiment. To see my findings check this link. I'll post settings a little later.

I've been toying with hair and I don't see a SHADERS = "ON" anywhere in my render settings? Am I overlooking something? blink.gif
KenH
Maybe you need the advanced settings on to see it. I think that's in the general options tab.
Ilidrake
I do have advanced settings on. Is it in the plugins at the bottom? Or is that for general lighting?
