I'm about to start to model a few medieval armors to have in Woodman's chamber and in Mrs. Yoop's castle. I've been given a few ref to start with. The first armor to build will be based on this one:
armor ref. If someone else find some nice armors on all mighty google that might fit, feel free to post them in this thread

I have a ton of reference images of medieval armor and costumes -- was just looking at it last week. Its on my pc in San Diego though and we're in Big Bear until tomorrow. Let me know if you are interested. Each outfit comes with front/back/side shots as they were prepared for 3D artists.

Cheers,
Rusty

That would be really helpful smile.gif Thanks in advance

Here is an early wip render of the first armor. Going to add helmet and a rack to have it all on next

I've added an helmet to the outfit.

I started to think about how to make the rack for this suite? some kind of an wooden "T" to hang it on with some kind of chain to link the parts together, or an backplate where the parts are strapped on to or a dummy to put it on? any idea?

Try this:

Or this one:

(Searched on "SCA Armor Stand")

Thanks Octropos
I'll try the one you linked to first, but I'll need to modify it so it can carry the arm and leg parts.
agep
I've started on the stand. Not yet finished though, I'll need to make some kind of attachment for the legs

Hi,

I have zipped all the medieval reference images (just under 14Mb) and placed it here:

http://www.virtualmediastudios.com/medieval.zip

I'll leave it there until through this Friday so grab it before then. If you have any problems let me know.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Rusty

PS: Anyone who wants this is welcome to grab it.

I have zipped all the medieval reference images

Thanks rusty
Unfortunately they where mainly clothes, not armors

Here is an update of the armor:

Next armor I'll be modelling is a small one, inspired by this image:

That first suit of Armor is spot on.
More outstanding modeling from the production house of Stian.

Looking forward to the next one. smile.gif

Looks great. I personally would like to see everything covered (face and feet) so that it seems like there might be someone inside going to jump out on the group.
agep
Thanks Rodney

I could probably do a few of them also, but I would need some good rotos for that.

I've laid out the basic mesh for the second armor. I'm going to tweak it before I'll add the leather straps and the rack

That's a good point but I also like the idea of the variety that would be gained by having empty suits of armor.

Think about it for a moment... the castle is suppose to be large and empty.
The fact that it ISN'T large and empty (as the characters and viewer get to discover independently) is really the whole reason for the scenery. Um... I think. biggrin.gif

Update on the armor. Going to add the leather straps next

The second unit in this medieval fashion collections is done:

I've been googling to find the next armor suite to make. It is hard to find any good images of any, but I ended up with this one. I'm going to give it a shot

Stian
KenH
Yeah, cool! That's what I'm talking about. He might be hard to rig and if you're not, maybe you can model him with his arms down.

I'll probably model him in the pose (or model him in a "T" pose then lower his arms in a simple pose. I guess there is no need of rigging a statue.. or?
mtpeak2
Nice job on the armor.

Here you go Stian, try these on for size.
Zaryin
Nice armor so far, Stian.

I love those armor refs. I am going to save them in case I feel like modeling those in the future smile.gif.
agep
Thanks for your comments

Thanks. Those armors looks very nice. I might use one of them as ref on the next one

anyway, here is the wip image of the one I'm working on right now:

New update on the armor:

[attachmentid=19596]
Rodney
Not only are you really good at modeling... you are really quick!
Nice update.
KenH
Yeah, nice. I think the Knight on the cd will need replacing. wink.gif
Zaryin
I really love this new armor so far.
Mr. Jaqe
Wow, they're all highly impressive.

Keep the great work up, Stian!

Btw, how many are you making?

Cheers,
Joakim
agep
Thank you guys

Actually I'm not sure. But a few more after this one I believe is required.

New update. He now got parts of his legs done

These suits of armor are lined up in Tin Woodman's bedroom. (However, the one above is so good we'll probably use it in Mrs. Yoop's Castle when she's playing Hide-n-Seek with Tin Owl and Tin Girl.)
Rodney
(Light Bulb goes on)

Ah... TW is a collector. smile.gif
agep
New update. Have given him the sword and a pose. Going to do the helmet next

Stian

[attachmentid=19677]
agep
I've finally added the helmet to the armor. I've also done a groupshot of the three armors so far, just for fun. I've changed the copper material on the first one to match the others (I think the copper material gave it a to much roman feel to it). The full armor is not yet finished. I still needs to add boots and a few more rivets, and I'll also going to adjust the rack so that the armor will stand rather than hang on it. Hope you like the update.

Hey !
They're very nice Stian !

Will you install a rig in it ?

Al

The "full" armor needs a special rig for using it in Yoop's Castle. Tin Girl and Tin Owl are hiding behind it, the armor's hand tugs at Mrs. Yoop's apron, and the armour tilts and falls on the castle corridor floor, scattering into many pieces.
agep
The third collectors item is done smile.gif
Next up will be an armor inspired by the image reference provided by Mark, which I think is a darn cool armor. I'll probably use the full armor I've already made as the basemodel

[attachmentid=19701]
martin
All of these armors are really cool. Tin Woodman lives the life, I tell you. Being an emperor and all...
Rodney
I'm not sure where the decision was made to add the armor to Tin Woodman's room but it's a real winner.
Little touches like that are really going to make this film.

...and the great modeling... and great texturing... and great animating... <on and on>

I'm remain awe of your talent Stian.
agep
Thanks Rodney and Martin

I've started modelling on the fourth armor:

[attachmentid=19822]

And here is an small update. Some details added:

Mr. Jaqe
A real beauty, Stian!
MMZ_TimeLord
Excellent work Stian... as usual. I can't wait to grab these to see the wireframes. I'm sure they are VERY economic.

Again... Great job! Cheers!
Dhar
There's a large selection of armor suits at the Waffenmuseum (war museum) in Vienna. Amazing stuff, especially all the thought and workmanship that went into those gothic armors.

Oh, and nice work Stian smile.gif

[attachmentid=19859]
agep
Thanks guys

err unsure.gif Unfortunately they are a bit patch heavy (goes from 2700 for the smallest one and about 4600 for the biggest one....)

Here is a new update on the last one:
Next to do is the sword, shield and the rack

[attachmentid=19862]
Rodney
Can we see them fighting? smile.gif

<just kidding>

Remind me to hire you to model characters for me.
agep
The last armor is finish smile.gif

Oh, and here is the groupshot of the all:
