It becomes more and more apparent that these Loons aren't all there. (especially King Bal at the beginning!)
The evasive nature of pinning the character of the Loons down suggests this may be by design.
They are creative and talented and subject to the pitfalls of human nature not unlike we are.
As the Seven Dwarves of 'Snow White' were born with characteristics that compeled them so too it would appear are the Loons.
Lets examine the song to see what we can see shall we?
(Chant throughout the whole song)
Wop them, bop them, pop them,
Wop them, bop them, POP them,
Wop them, bop them, POP them.
We are the Loons, and
we're really tough,
Don't fool with us because
we can get rough,
They even describe what they are willing to doWe'll pull on your toes, and tweak your nose,
We'll twist your hair, and make you stare,
Until you yell, "Enough!"
We are the Loons, and
we know why you're here,
They see others potential actions through their ownYou want to
stretch us, and
bend us, and
pull on our ear,
They can be stretched and bent. They have earsYou may think you're clever but we know what you'll do,
They think they are far more cleverYou'll wop us, and bop us, your goal is to POP us,
Popping isn't fatal to a Loon but it apparently hurts the ego. Its humiliating... and deflating. So we'll do it first to you.
Sure are defensive little guys aren't they? They've had visitors before. We are the Loons but
we're not buffoons,
They see themselves as united...especially while singing, chanting...wopping and bopping. They are at least mildly aware that they aren't in the norm. They are Loons... and therefore of superior materialYou come in the morning, and you won't leave by noon,
You'll mess with us, guess with us, you'll even dress with us,
Wish fulfillment? Others have tried but they have been tied,
More proof that they have been visited beforeJust like we'll do to you.
So, what did I learn? Um... still working on that.
At first blush it seems like the Loons continually play a game of Wop Them Bop Them with each other and any visitor that comes along. Its not much of a life... but its fun.
Any insight from Frank L. Baum?
