What sound is so sweet,
As the straw from the wheat,
When it crinkles so tender and low?

It is yellow and bright,
So it gives me delight,
To crinkle wherever I go.

Sweet, fresh, golden straw,
There is surely no flaw,
In a stuffing so clean and compact.

It creaks when I walk,
And it thrills when I talk,
And its fragrance is fine,
For a fact.

To cut me don’t hurt,
For I’ve no blood to squirt,
And I therefore can suffer no pain,

The straw that I use,
Doesn’t lump up or bruise.
Though it’s pounded again and again!

Though it's pounded again and again!

I know it is said,
That my beautiful head,
Has brains of mixed wheat-straw and bran.

But my thoughts are so good,
I’d not change, if I could,
For the brains of a common meat man.

Content with my lot,
I'm glad that I'm not,
Like others I meet day-by-day.

If my insides get musty,
Or mussed-up or dusty,
I get newly stuffed right away!
Rodney
This'll be a treat to animate too.
What a fun little song. It perfectly puts Scarecrow in the spotlight and clues everyone in to his 'condition'.

I wonder if there are any other Baum songs from the other Oz books we could use.

It would seem Tin Woodman has captivated his audiences with love songs before:
QUOTE
That last evening was so delightful that the boy will never forget it as long as he lives. They were all together (except Eureka) in the pretty rooms of the Princess, and the Wizard did some new tricks, and the Scarecrow told stories, and the Tin Woodman sang a love song in a sonorous, metallic voice, and everybody laughed and had a good time.
- From Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz

Too bad the words aren't written down eh?

Edit: Tin Woodman sings his love song (or yet another one) again in 'The Road to Oz'.
Again... there are no words of the song written in the book but it does mention that the others joined in the chorus. Hmmm.....

QUOTE
the Tin Woodman sang a love song, every one joining in the chorus;

Here's another Oz song this time as sung by The Shaggy Man in 'Patchwork Girl of Oz'.
It might help to inspire...

QUOTE
"I'll sing a song of Ozland, where wondrous creatures dwell
And fruits and flowers and shady bowers abound in every dell,
Where magic is a science and where no one shows surprise
If some amazing thing takes place before his very eyes.

Our Ruler's a bewitching girl whom fairies love to please;
She's always kept her magic sceptre to enforce decrees
To make her people happy, for her heart is kind and true
And to aid the needy and distressed is what she longs to do.

And then there's Princess Dorothy, as sweet as any rose,
A lass from Kansas, where they don't grow fairies, I suppose;
And there's the brainy Scarecrow, with a body stuffed with straw,
Who utters words of wisdom rare that fill us all with awe.

I'll not forget Nick Chopper, the Woodman made of Tin,
Whose tender heart thinks killing time is quite a dreadful sin,
Nor old Professor Woggle-Bug, who's highly magnified
And looks so big to everyone that he is filled with pride.

Jack Pumpkinhead's a dear old chum who might be called a chump,
But won renown by riding round upon a magic Gump;
The Sawhorse is a splendid steed and though he's made of wood
He does as many thrilling stunts as any meat horse could.

And now I'll introduce a beast that ev'ryone adores--
The Cowardly Lion shakes with fear 'most ev'ry time he roars,
And yet he does the bravest things that any lion might,
Because he knows that cowardice is not considered right.

There's Tik-Tok--he's a clockwork man and quite a funny sight--
He talks and walks mechanically, when he's wound up tight;
And we've a Hungry Tiger who would babies love to eat
But never does because we feed him other kinds of meat.

It's hard to name all of the freaks this noble Land's acquired;
'Twould make my song so very long that you would soon be tired;
But give attention while I mention one wise Yellow Hen
And Nine fine Tiny Piglets living in a golden pen.

Just search the whole world over--sail the seas from coast to coast--
No other nation in creation queerer folk can boast;
And now our rare museum will include a Cat of Glass,
A Woozy, and--last but not least--a crazy Patchwork Lass."
Rodney
Aha! Here's another from 'Patchwork Girl of Oz'.
A short little song sung by none other than Scarecrow himself.
It stands to reason he might hum or sing the song more than once. wink.gif

It or a similar song might work well at the end of the movie but I guess that isn't straw.
Hmmm....

QUOTE
"Here's to the hale old bale of straw
That's cut from the waving grain,
The sweetest sight man ever saw
In forest, dell or plain.
It fills me with a crunkling joy
A straw-stack to behold,
For then I pad this lucky boy
With strands of yellow gold."
Rodney
I spoke briefly with Robert (Robcat) about this one.
Has this one been connected with music yet?

As an orignial song from the TWO book this one is pure gold.
Its a great place to spotlight Scarecrow too.

Even Will Sutton can't fuss at this song... it's in the original! biggrin.gif

If no one else has tackled it I'd like to suggest Scarecrow's song be to a variation of "Bicycle bulit for TWO".
You know... 'Daisy Daisy give me your answer do". Ya know?

What sound is so sweet,
Da dada da da
(What soundis so sweet)

As the straw from the wheat,

Dada da da dada
(Asthe straw from thewheat)

When it crinkles so tender and low?
Da da dada da dada da da
(When it crinkles so tender and low....)

>repeat verses ad nauseum as Scarecrow stuts his stuffing!<

I'll try to humm a few bars or sumthin' if no one gets it.
...or is the music already there for this one?
martin
Good idea. Post an mp3 of "A Bicycle Built For TWO" here, and let's see if we can get Robert to sing his Scarecrow voice over it.

Will do just as soon as I return from church.

If I can't find an MP3... or it doesn't fit what I'm really after <drum roll please> I'll sing it! tongue.gif

Here ya go Rodney!!!

Rodney
Keep it rollin' Teresa. It looks like I have to find a microphone.
It figures when I need one the most I wouldn't be able to locate one.
I'll do some digging tomorrow and see what I can find.

NancyGormezano
As much as I wanted to hear Rodney sing, and I was about to do a rendition as well BUT luckily for you all - I found an mp3 - what I also found was that it's a much longer song than just the very familiar chorus sung here. This is what we firmly call schmaltz.

And, for a really sickening midi that you can sing-along with all the lyrics:

http://www.singalongwithme.com/bicyclebuilt/

Now that's called chutzpah.
Rodney
Will Sutton's gonna love that one Nancy! Especially those cute bunnies. tongue.gif

"Daisy Daisy" doesn't *quite* hit hit the mark of what I'm singing over on this side of the keyboard.
Its not Scarecrow that's in love after all.

Just woke up but I'll begin anew my search for a microphone...

Unless Nancy want's to sing it. wink.gif

Oh and I might add... I think this song perhaps more than others in the movie might be sung a cappella.

A cappella defined for the uninitiate:
A cappella music is vocal music or singing without instrumental accompaniment, or a piece intended to be performed in this way. A cappella is Italian for from the chapel (music); the term is due to restrictions on the use of instruments in medieval churches. It is often misspelled as a capella, which is not the Latin spelling, or even acappella.

Signing by the campfires etc. (See other songs from the Oz books).
This unless accompanying characters pull out a flute or some other interesting instrument.
Rodney
Looks like I'll be buying a new microphone.

The last known location of one of them was with my daughters when they were playing.
"Welcome to McDonalds, may I take your order?" was the last thing my wife remembers hearing them say through it...

a cappella singing is only for the extremely brave/talented or the tone-deaf

QUOTE

I got brave and tone-deaf covered. Two out of three will kill ya*. wink.gif

*ya not me.

Quite seriously... think about it.
Scarecrow... walking along and suddenly getting his urge to wax poetically about the stuff.ing great things are made out of.

He doesn't need a band... doesn't need an orchestra... he just needs Robert.
If you are a bit reserved, untalented and tonedeaf that'll help but I've seen your musical talent.
If you're extremely brave/talented and not tone deaf. We can work with ya.

IOW - Scarecrow is in good hands.
Rodney
Julia to Papa: "Look what I found."
Papa to Julia: " wub.gif "

Microphone located. We are back in buisness.
Rodney
Well... enough procrastinating already.

It's not pretty but neither is the one I envisioned Scarecrow singing.
He'd ham it up a bit more... thumping his chest, pointing at his head... pulling straw out and putting it back.
Swinging around little trees. Dancing as only scarecrows can.

There's a typo (repeat of a verse) in Martin's post of the song but I left it in the song.
It's where Scarecrow sings, "Though its pounded again and again".
To have him sing (yet again) the same verse while stuffing himself back up or pounding his chest might play well.

There does seem to be a chorus and I stripped it out of the song.
I've placed it at both the beginning and the end and it's become the title of this little version.
I'll link it last though as it could fit anywhere.

Without further ado... from me to you... (in increments due to size)

"Sweet Fresh Golden Straw"

In the key of "Zzz... Major". tongue.gif

Rodney
The chorus

I imagine it with a thud at the end not unlike the *boom* at the end of 'Circle of Life' from Lion King. wink.gif
Maybe its Scarecrow tripping and falling with a marvelous thud to end the song.
After wards his friends pick him up and they press on?

The chorus shouldn't be sung after each verse as that'd just prolong the agony...

Hi Rodney,

Great singing! Keep it coming.

terrific voice Rodney - I sure hope you're playing one of the characters ?

(Actually I'm disapointed - I was hoping to be able to poke fun at your singing) wink.gif
Rodney
QUOTE

blush.gif

I'm sure we could proceed with other music but that's the tune that hit me as I read the words.
Whatever music is accepted I think some great pose to pose animation could be put together to fit with the words.

What straw is so sweet? (Scarecrow pulls a handful of straw out of his shirt and pulls it to his face as if smelling)
As the straw from the wheat (Separates the wheat into both hands and and hits marking pose)
When it crinkles (step delay - with obvious crinkling) so tender (step delay w/crinkling) and low (softer crinkle) (straw is placed back into one hand)
It's yellow and white (Pulls another handful of straw from his shirt -with free hand - and shows his friends)
it gives me delight (strong pose - revolving away from friends as he lifts straw to the sky with one hand)
to crinkle (fast (delay - slow motion-like - step step step w/ crinkle) wherever (delay step step step w/ crinkle) I go (walking away pose)

Scarecrows antics and the volume of straw he starts pulling out increases throughout the song.
At a point he realizes he is de-strawing himself (the pounding verses?) and he'll start to put the straw back in

QUOTE

I sure hope you're playing one of the characters ?

Hard to see that happening... I'd gladly play an extra or Loon lackey though. smile.gif
Do they have singing parts? Will? Will Sutton? Can someone get Will's read on the singing Loons?
robcat2075
Hey that's a good voice Rodney! Can you deliver speaking lines with expression?

the melody sounds very Appalachian. I think it needs some more contour, though, if it's going to be repeated.

Got some contour?
Rodney
QUOTE
Got some contour?

Contour? Have we got contour?
Um... somewhere around this place.

I agree... needs a little inflection here and there with some change of pitch... and duration.
That is the basic layout of the song however.

While I imagine most musical numbers might be fairly complete and then animated to I can't help but think this one might be served by adapting the music to the animation.

A little give and take.

It'd be fun to do the whole thing right here in the forum.
Not that we are up to that tasking! blink.gif

martin
Niels de Gooier has been staying up all night, dedicating his musical talents to TWO, just like the rest of you are committing your talents. I admire and appreciate that.

The 1st version is in the more traditional "children's style" that we all might be expecting to hear...

However, the 2nd version is what Niels is known for composing... And, frankly, I love it. What do you think?
Rodney
If Scarecrow will be breakdancing in the scene... definitely the second one. wink.gif

I could see this as the theme for scarecrow but its a major departure from how I envision Scarecrow.
It'd definitely drive a different personality and perhaps push a different performance out of the man made of straw.

Probably need to hear more (maybe with lyrics?) on the first.
Of note is that this is the ONLY song that is in the original TWO story.
If Niels considers that angle that may provide the necessary inspiration.

The thought I have is that this song defines Scarecrow.
Who he is. Who he thinks he is. How others will percieve him.
The tune should do no less.

Show us what you've got Niels!
NancyGormezano
QUOTE(martin @ Nov 3 2006, 06:17 AM) *

What do you think?

The second, without a doubt, no question. Go original Niels go.

Personally, for every aspect of this movie, I'd rather read reviews (3-5 years hence) that include words like "surprising, creative, innovative" rather than "predictable, just what you'd expect, formulaic".
robcat2075
I'm not saying it absolutely shouldn't or can't be done but there are some complications in making a song for the scarecrow....

[attachmentid=21946]
Rodney
Hmmm...

Well... there is a lot of room to manuever in here. Some precedence exists.
Consider the following for instance.

Gomer Pyle
Jim Nabors in character portrayal of Gome Pyle was an interesting one.
From his "Kirk Douglas... Kirk Douglas!" comical style he found a way to incorporate his baratone(?) voice in an way that added depth to the character... and it made sense too!

In real life you have singers from various countries that in regular speach have considerably thick accent but when they sing... no trace of any accent whatsoever.

Then there is always the talking song.
Or you could line the song and the other characters could sing it thereafter.

Lots of ways to get around or through the problem.
The biggest issue would appear to be where to put the song. I don't think the sequence was kept in the script... was it?

As it was in the orignal text it was a way to explore the character of Scarecrow after our adventurers departed Tin Castle. As I recall it helped compare the difference (weakness?) of those made of meat and those made of tin or straw. Its an important part of the original story but I'm not so sure that element is a theme in our TWO.

As I said... Hmmm...

I am wondering if any one character in the movie has to sing this at all? I have seen alot of animated movies and some songs are song not from the characters but the charaters are acting out with the song while it is playing. Could that work? the 2nd ver. as is just as it is on Martin's post

Okay, Rodney, sing that over the "Bicycle Built for Two" (TWO - haha), melody, and we'll post it to SVN.

Martin,
I take it you mean Niel's song here?

I wrote this last year, but didn't show it because I'm not real crazy about the idea of a ScareCrow song. But Martin inquired, so here it is.

It's just a skeleton of the concept; it doesn't hit all the verses and I haven't figured out how to do it all in the ScareCrow voice.

Get the rest of it done. We need the length. Fabrice is building the set and Yves is animating it - they'll both be ready soon.
Rodney
Do we know where in the script this song is going to be sung?

This will be the determinant of what we can do with the song.
For instance, I assume this takes place just before 'The Fight' and may even contribute to it occuring. As such its unlikely that Tin Woodman will be joining in the song (as great as it sounds as sung by Robert!) It might be more likely that Tin Woodman shows through his nonverbals that he doesn't quite agree with Scarecrow's high opinion of straw as a superior material.

If sung earlier perhaps it might work with Tin Woodman and Woot joining in the chorus.
That'd be neat. A kind of lining the song if you will.

I'll head back for a look at the script.

Edit: Quickly answered my own question.
The song is right there in the script now; SEQUENCE 2_04 “SONG”!

Wow. Someone has been busy. Great job! smile.gif
robcat2075
Ok, this version incorporates all ten (10!) stanzas of the original poem. I'm not saying that's a good idea, I'm just saying it does!

I think we should shift it to happen after "The Fight". That would give the Scarecrow a reason to sing it, and move it farther away from "We're Off, We're Gone".

Maybe it's the Rabbit joining in! Or the lillies of the field!

Or maybe they're really just kidding each other about their advantages and the Tinman knows the Scarecrow is fine after all.

All good ideas: I could be convinced... I'll make sure Yves reads this - he's animating the sequence, and I'll make sure Fabrice sees it too - he's modeling the set.

We have another musical score for "Scarecrow's Song." (Niels deGooier does a 2nd rap version.)

I started working on Scarecrow Song animation sequence. The first thing I did was to write down the timing of the song in an Excel sheet. A sort of very compact X-sheet. I used the song recorded by Robert Holmen. This was the one that inspired me the most. I attached the Excel sheet in a zip file and the equivalent text file for those interested.

I tried to paste the text file in a "code" bloc but the handling of tabs in a code block is totally inadequate.

I like Roberts version better (I must be conservative tongue.gif )

Cheers
robcat2075
I look forward to seeing what you come up with, Yves. As long as you don't have me scratching myself in an odd manner.
Rodney
I'm just now getting caught up on TWO happenings and its the first time I've heard Robert's song.

This sounds like a song that would be sung while traveling down the backroads of Oz.
Bravo! Encore! smile.gif

Can hardly wait to see your take on this in animated action Yves.
robcat2075
I hope we can get Neils' version on the soundtrack CD. It's an entertaining take on the lyrics.
