Full Version: Song Lyrics and Music for TWO?

Our collaboration with "Christian Youth Theater" (CYT) to produce a play based on TWO continues... Most of their plays are musicals, and we would like TWO to contain more songs. If you think you can write music and lyrics, and don't expect to get paid much (if anything), then please submit your music and lyrics for consideration, (you'll retain the copyright.)

Is there a particular style? My mother-in-law is an amateur singer/songwriter and would love to get involved in something big like TWO.

Her present style is mainly UK folkmusic - the odd humorous ditty about cats but mostly ballads about cheating husbands (ooer - let's not get her on that subject).

As the introduction of additional songs would require the removal of dialogue, or adding new scenes, I think it would be useful to identify where these passages would be.

The composers would need to know something about what the music is meant to convey. Mood, tempo, etc... and, if possible, how long each sequence would be.

There are some natural scenes (especially for a play): Act I Sequence 1, introducing Woot's desire to be an adventurer (all those antics Woot does aren't practical in a play); Mrs. Yoop's multiple transformations also are not possible in a play, so a "I know you'll like our time together," song; Tin Woodman's heartbreak after being rejected by Nimmie Amee; Tin Woodman's dejection after learning Tin Nimmie Amee can't love him; Woot's dejection about not doing anything right; Ku-Klip singing about his skills; The Loons chanting; the return to Winkieville; and music for Scarecrow's song that is already in the movie.

Mrs. Yoop's multiple transformations also are not possible in a play,

Wagner was able to change a man into a giant dragon and a tiny frog on the stage in Bayreuth.

Some clever stagecraft could sell those transformations.

When Mrs. Yoop is a giant, how about if we saw a giant shadow cast by the offstage performer . Like in old horror movies. The performers on stage would interact with it as if it were Mrs. Yoop.

Shadows would be perfect for such a thing... mirrors too but they are hard to find that large.
The transformation scenes could be really incredible with a little light and shadow strategically placed.
Having Mrs. Yoop as the Giantess only appear in shadow would also set the mood.
When she shrinks down do 'normal' size the actor would be revealed.

What fun! smile.gif

Why not take a leaf out of Sam Buntrock's book and incorporate some A:M projections?

Back projection for effects going on behind Mrs. Yoop. Lights, smoke, ribbons of material and fans to create a chaotic maelstrom around the character while she contorts into poses, some of which would hide her face enough to slip on/off a mask or two. You might even swap actors in the chaos which would enable more dramatic changes to occur.

It would be a fun choreography to direct. Perhaps you should get Greg Rostrami (sp?) to work some of his magic into the Yoop scenes.

that's a great idea--incorporating some digitally projected animation into the play!

How do you submit?

Rusty,
Just post them here or in their separate topics.

Okay, I think we've got the songs identified, and at least some starting lyrics for each. Now, it's time for the music, and we've got a good start on that. Don't be afraid to throw your attempt in with the rest of them, (but keep to the appropriate thread - sequence number).

Do you have an Intro yet? I am not a professional musician, but I do have Reason 3.0 and have wrote several songs using it . If I have a mood and transisition note to the first scne I could make a dramtic orchestrated or poppy title for you.. ( is it like a bugs life? zoom in start and happy, or dark and mysterious start like monster house)?

Anyway I'd be glad to help.

Most of the threads in this area contain lyrics that have no score, or only rudimentary ideas for beat. We could really use someone to write music. Pick one - see what you can do?

Is there a place I can go to look at the lyrics that no one else is working on music for, so were all working on the same thing, are all the songs grouped in one place???

Scroll down to see the songs. Each has its own thread. Any work that has been submitted so far for each song: lyrics, score, beats, ideas; is in each thread.
