Quick though... is there an ability that allows one to use a path that has a sort of "ribbon" quality to it? What we can do with paths now is control foward motion, but I am wondering about roll motion. Think of the "ribbon path" as a roller coaster track that controls both the over path of the object as well as how it rolls that object.

I don't think there is any automatic solution to the effect that you are after but you can rig the object on the path to 'aim at' a bone which is travelling on a slightly different path or you could roll the object manually on the bends.

Edit: I haven't tried this, so I don't know if it will work, but I just had the thought of constraining a dynamic bone to the path and seeing how well that reacts to the bends. If that works you could have a bone in your model constrained to 'orient like' the dynamic bone. Might be worth a try.

Controlling "roll" along a path is best achieved using the "Aim Roll At" constraint:
