Full Version: Am I doing poses wrong?

I always seem to get stuck on the simplest things it seems. I can't create a pose. In my model I use new-pose-percentage, change to muscle mode to edit. I see the slider in the pose slider window. But when I close the relationship window, the slider disappears. Not having done this before, I'm not sure if this is what is supposed to happen or what. Is there a final step I'm missing? I went through the Art of AM book but that was a long time ago so I can't recall if they worked then or not.

Do you have an Action open somewhere when you make the new pose? Close all Actions and Choreographies, right mouse click on the model in the PWS and select "New/Pose/Percentage" to make the pose. Once you've finished editing it, close it and open a new Action. The slider for the new pose should appear in the Pose window. You will also find the slider under "Properties/User Properties" for the model, which is where you can organize and name the pose sliders.

Hope that helps, Chris.

Press Alt 4 to open a pose window with your model selected in an action/chor. Your pose should be in there ready to be slid.

Ok, thanks much guys, I didn't realize I had to create an action to see it. Thanks for the help!

Argh, I need to go back an edit a pose. I selected the pose in the Relationships under the model and used right-click>Edit Relationship, and it opens in an action window, but when I move the pose slider the model doesn't change. I just want to change a couple small things, not redo the whole pose. Getting really frustrated....

You're doing it the right way. This is another one where we'd need to see the model.

I don't believe you are doing anything wrong. In version 12 and earlier, this commonly happened (at least with my install--PC version for Win XP). If you save, close and re-open the project, the pose should animate properly in the edit window. I upgraded to v13, and I don't seem to see this problem anymore.

I just created a simple model and a new pose for testing and verified this problem happens in v12. I duplicated the project and pose in v13 and did not experience the problem at all.

Thanks for the tip, arkaos, interesting to hear you can replicate the problem. However, even after I save and close and re-open the project, it still doesn't work. I upgraded to 12u and tried creating a new project in case my old was got corrupted somehow, but it still doesn't work. I'll post the test file, and maybe try a re-install.

I'm getting it to work fine. Though with the timeline open, it slows down considerably (I've reported this, but apparently it needs to do it), so you might press ALT+2 to see if it works better.

I don't get it....it doesn't work for me. How can the same file work for one person and not another? This is insane.

Chris, I've got good news for you, buddy! I opened your test project in v12u and the pose wouldn't move in edit mode for me either. However, I have found a workaround to solve the problem.

1) Enter edit pose mode.
2) Select the relationship action under the "Actions" folder in the project workspace.
3) Right click and select "Remove Simulation Data"
4) Presto, pose animates with the slider and you are back in business.

Unfortunately, this must be done every time you open the pose for editing.

Mark, you are, as the kids say these days, 'da man.' I shall sacrifice young virgins in your name on my altar to Satan in my basement----erm, wait, did I say that out loud? Umm, just ignore that last part.

But seriously, thanks so much. I don't know how you figured that out, I know I never would have. Brewskis all around!

Have a good time with your project.
