There is a tutorial ("Show some Backbone") in TAoA:M on adding a rig to a character.

Also the Rigging and relationships forum here for specific Q's.

The problem is that I don't want to add a rig that someone else has made I would rather do it myself so that I can improve on it or work with it etc...
There seems to be a general lack of information on the subject for A:M

Making a great rig is a pretty mind-bending thing. If you don't know much about rigs yet it's going to be a long time before you improve on the ones already available.

Here's the choice... you can install the available rig in the tut (a fine rig) and start animating... or you can spend a long time learning to "rig", maybe never get it, and not start animating until you do.

That said, you might begin by dissecting the rig in the tut to see how it works.

And as I mentioned before...

There's a step by step rigging tutorial at http://demented3d.com/tutorial/

from a basic skeleton to fk/ik arms and more.

IMO everyone should learn how to rig a model from scratch, by constantly using prebuilt rigs you limit your characters and their range of motion.

I agree.

I'm not say that it isn't I'm saying that I would like to build it from the foundation up obviously I won't be able make it better right off the bat but understanding the construction and how it is built will atleast provide a ground work of knowledge on how to further a rig or understand why a figure is moving the way that it is.
