Here's the concept for the Farmhands.
And here's the face so far. It 's going to need alot of tweaking, but I hope to get it right before I'm done

Looking good Jeff though I'd like to see more egg shaped eyes like the roto though this may be just an eyelid position/shape thing.
Cheers

Great start Jeff, I made a few tweeks, biggest one is the eyes should be more oval.

Bob: Yeah, I'm having trouble getting the eyes oval with a circular eye and keeping the face skinny. I thought the nose wasn't pointy enough

Bob and Jim: The only way I can see giving him such oval eyes is by increasing the size of the eye until it's too big for his skinny head. Plus, the iris and pupil then fill the entire area. I have no idea what to do about this. It's driving my nutty.
Maybe it just the shape of the eyelids. I just can't see it anymore. I'll keep trying.
Just ranting. Like I said, it's driving my nutty.
EDIT: Yeah, I just tried again and I can't get it. So I'm just not going to do oval eyes and then someone else can try to get them after I'm done.
It's getting me so frustrated I'm failry close to giving this model to someone else. UGH!
NEXTEDIT: I think I can get the eyelids to look oval shaped. That's as close as I can get it.
I hope everyone is enjoying my rant, haha.

Hang in there, Jeff. And yes, I'm enjoying this.

Sometimes to get eyes to work that way I make the eyes a little wall-eyed, and then bring them closer together inside the head. If the eyes overlap inside the head, that doesn't matter. No one will see or care, unless they're very anal-retentive.
And feel free to adjust the size of the iris and cornea if they get too big.

Thanks guys.
Here's more for the rant. I just made that big mistake that no matter how often you do it, you end up doing it again. That's right I forgot to save *sigh*. Had the whole head done and, BAM! Oh, well. It's probly for the best. Now I might have a chance to fix the eyes better, without having to tweak the entire head after I am done.
I feel a problem model for me here. More rants forthcoming

I think I might be getting somewhere. Here's another update.
I think the nose might be a little too pointy from the side, but I'll wait from you to see if I should leave it or blunt it down.

Thanks Nancy. For some reason I just can't get him to match the ref perfectly. Of course, the ref is more a sketch than a fully-done picture. I'm hoping people give me a little leeway

Looks really good.
If you are still trying to fit him to the drawing, you may want to look into elongating the relaxed eyes slightly. Also the eyes in the drawing are at a bit of an angle rather than straight up and down. The eyes alone really control a lot of who a character is. Lastly, the ears on the drawing seperate a bit more from the head... I don't really know what the personality of this character is because I haven't read the script (I'll get around to it!

) so I should probably just shut up... but things like having the ears hang out more from the head also can quite significantly influence the perceived personality of the character.
Once again, you have an excellent character there already and I'm just trying to help out a bit if you're going for complete faithfulness to the drawing.
Keep up the good work,

Ross: What does "elongating the relaxed eyes slightly", mean?

. As far as I know the character is only in the movie for a very short time, like 2 to 5 seconds. So I don't really know how close to the sketch I need to get. I will look into the ear thing, but I really don't know what you mean about the eyes. Thanks again.
Mike: That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw him. In fact I saw a quick glimpse at a 5 minute short starring both farmhands. I doubt that will happen though

Ok, here's an update. I got the base body done. He stands at 6 foot right now. The proportions are matched to the sketch.
I probably won't be on again until Monday, or at least not alot

. So Merry Christmas to you, and to the politically correct, Happy Holidays!

I'm never getting off thse boards, haha.
Ken: If you look at my first face image you'll see that the chin does taper. I changed it when Bob posted his fixes for the face. You'll notice that Bob has it ending blunter in that image, so I went with that.

Hey, sorry for the confusion... it seems like I found the absolute worst way of explaining that

I just meant to make the actual eyeball more of an elongated oval. I noticed that you made the eye socket have more of an oval shape earlier but you let the eyeball stay very spherical.
... and seriously, only a few seconds in the movie?! If I somehow managed to create a character like that he'd be onscreen 100% of the time
Zaryin
Dec 23 2005, 02:44 PM
Ha, thanks Ross

. I did make the eyeball more oval shaped. I'm assuming the rigger and animater can give it more of a wide-eyed look when he's animating.
I really don't care how long my character ends up on screen. I model all my characters like they'll be in it 100 % of the time. I want everything in this movie to look and feel like we cared about it. THat way it makes the movie, and A:M, look all the better.
Now I'm really out of here, haha.
