Here's where I will be modeling the Tin Guardsman/Servant.
Jim: Could you post a link to the eyeballs that everyone is using for the models? I can't seem to find them on the forum.
Also, does he have a neck or does his chin just run into the torso?
He has four fingers in the pic. Should I give him three or four?
Thanks Jim.

Dec 9 2005, 09:28 PM
Jeff,
Here are the eyeballs.
I think you can make him so that his neck just blends into his face, with a seam at where it meets his chest. Yes, go with four fingers. We're not going totally cartoony, but caricature-ish/ stylized realism.

Here is the nearly finished head. (Still have the inside of the mouth and some eyelid stuff to do.)
Jim: I used and augmented, the ears fromt the "Woot Head" Post. I ifgured it would be easier for me, and the ears would match. Let me know if that's ok.
Jim and/or Bob: What should I do for the inside of the mouth? How many teeth, etc...
That's it for now. Time to start on the body until I hear about what more I need to do with the head

Nice! He's going to be great. I notice that the top lip seems to be quite thin. Also, the strap doesn't necessarily have to "stick" to the contours of the face.....for example, there could be a gap going up to his cheek from his jaw.
I wonder if we're going to be modeling alot of winkie characters. There are some saying goodbye to the group in the animatice. It seems alot of extra work for just one scene. I think the story can still work without the villagers and concentrating on the select group.

Ive been thinking about that it would be nice to do as pixar did on incredibles .Have one generic character that can be manipulated into many easily.Im going to try to design the ultimate winkie this week end.

robcat2075: I don't know where the original idea for the hat came from -- Bob, I'm thinking. I just build it as I see it

.
KenH: Made the top lip thin -- well -- actually there is no top lip at all. I see he didn't have one in the ref, so I didn't give him one.
The strap will probably have to be totally redone once we see what real hair will work like on him. I'll probably just leave it as is for now.
Jim: Where's my mouth stuff!

Thanks again.

BTW I have a similar cloak in my Yoop model. You can use it if you like. The model's in the thread.
PS Also, Bob, if you ever did want to avoid that scene with the villagers saying goodbye, you could have the servant say something like:
"There's a great crowed awaiting your departure"
But Tinman says,
"Actually, I'd rather leave by the back door. Please throw a party in my stead"
This might enforce Tinmans humbilness (sp?) and his embarrasment about why he's going on the trip.
Of course that's if you didn't want the scene....

Good idea Ken ... Ive taken a few back doors in my day, but I think its important that we see how loved and reveered the tinman as a benevolent leader is We will figure someting out. Its an important character point if we are to care for the poor love sick fella. You know everybody loves him but he cant have the one he loves stuff.

Yeah... we've just GOT to have a crowd scene.
I think there are several opportunities where EVERY A:M User who has ever wielded a mouse can have a character in a crowd scene. I think there are at least two crowd scenes in the movie (more or less); leaving the castle and in Loonville.
In order to get the variation and number of characters needed perhaps one of the A:M monthly contests could be a 'Design your own Winkie' contest where the generic character is used as starting point.** This could then be expanded into the Animation Contest where you would have to animate your character waiving or somesuch... a render to TGAs with alpha channel on and the images would be ready to be composited into the scene.
The winners of the contest could have their characters highlighted while the rest of our characters mingle in the background.
J U S T G O T T A h a v e at least one C R O W D S C E N E!
Rodney
** Just thinking off topic here too. If the rules stated that you could not delete or add CPs/Splines to the basic character (just mold, tweak and adjust) this could lead to some serious character morphing possibilities later on down the line not to mention what a programmer could do by extracting the change data. Just a stray thought though... sorry... I'm just thinking if *this* winkie looks this cool... what might 100s of them look like.

Here's a small update on the base body. I'll start detailing now. The thing I think is going to be hard is the armor for his torso. I am a little trepidatious on how to do that well.
JTalbotski
Dec 12 2005, 02:50 PM
Yeah, the shield-like plate that he has going down his pants is going to limit his ability to bend and move quite a bit. (Plus, it's gotta hurt!) Maybe it should just be a chest plate? But for now, just model it as you see it.
The shoulder guards shouldn't be too much trouble. You don't have to try to show too much detail about how they attach and such. Mark can handle rigging them in the right way. Just model things one at a time. I'm sure you will get enough feedback to keep you headed in the right direction. The embossed circles around the shield will be pretty difficult to model. We may just do a bump map or normal map for that.
He looks great!

Here he is with the tweaked legs an arms. I made him a little skinnier from the side. I also conformed the belly armor to him better. I fixed the crotch a little, but I'll see if I can get it better.
I probably won't be doing much more until I get a negative or positive to the new proportions. I might add the little tie-on things on the back of the legs near the calves next, or the strap for the belly armor, of the hands, etc... I guess there is some stuff I can work on
