Having sorted out my character's walk, I have her do an action in one Chor action as an Additive Action, then as she gets up, I want to change her arm positions. The walk cycle basically has arms slightly folded, hands in front, I want her arms to move with her walk as she goes away, but a little more slowly. This isn't a vigorous walk at all.
So I make the arm Chor action and it's set to Replace, to override the arm data. Ok. To minimize the look of the snap between the end of the Additive Chor action and the lightly swinging arms, I wanted to blend a bit. I know the Replace actions can't have a blend ease, so I thought "Transition to next action" The cross blend box appears. But at the start of the transition she's gone! Looking from top view and watching the numerical values, she jumps to the origin or something, then glides back. Please help? The arm action has to be replace, the previous action where she interacts with an object has to be Add. Other combinations do very weird things.
I have ordered the Anzovin NLA CD, but it's taking a long time to get up to Canada. It left via Chicago and so far... that's all she wrote. I bet I'd find the CDs at some universal origin point somewhere. So I am trying to sort this out myself. But I'm stumped.

Why does the arm action have to be set to "Replace"? Why don't you set it to "Blend" so you can blend it in?

I thought I had to replace the crossed arms. I'm having some success right now with Add. I've had some TSM issues with additive actions (joints can go a little bananas, but they (Anzovin) said that was something that can happen) but so far so good. Just tweaking and then I will test.
But I'd still like to know why she zipped off to ground zero before...one of life's mysteries.
And is there a more detailed explanation of Add vs. Blend? The book's (tech reference) examples are kind of like the difference between calling 2 shades of orange "tangerine" and "satsuma."

"Add" adds the values. "Blend" blends between them. "Replace" replaces them.
No? Not helping?
Consider a model raising her arms 30 degrees in the Chor. Now consider an action in the Chor in which the model raises her arms 40 degrees.
If the action is set to Add, the model will raise her arms 70 degrees.
If the action is set to Replace or Blend at 100%, the model will raise her arms 40 degrees.
If the action is set to Add at 50%, the model will raise her arms 50 degrees.
If the action is set to Blend at 50%, the model will raise her arms 35 degrees.
But that's just math. In practice, you'll tend to use Add when adding secondary action to primary action. You'll tend to use Blend when transitioning from one primary action to another.
You'll understand better once you watch the Anzovin CD, but otherwise just e-mail me and I'll try to fashion a more detailed answer.
