Here is how to prepare yourself for "Scarecrow of Oz" and other community projects, animation wise at least: Do the Ultimate Animation Boot Camp tongue.gif

Ultimate ABC

Ultimate ABC breaks down like this:
You build a demo reel by making a short final piece for each of 7 levels of skill. You are advised to do your own little excercises to help yourself learn and ingrain the skills for that level. Post your excercises and final projects on the forum to get critiqued and improve yourself.

Level 1: Basic Movement
Final Project: 2 living balls of different weight/material interacting. 1 ball should have a tail.

Level 2: Basic Biped Movement
Final Project: Take Mr. Ball through an obstacle course of primitive objects

Level 3: Basic Humanoid Movement
Final Project: Have a humanoid fall down(get knocked down, trip, faint, etc) and then stand back up.

Level 4: Basic Emoting
Final Project: Have a juice box enter the screen feeling one emotion, then exit feeling another

Level 5: Basic Humanoid Emoting
Final Project: Show a humanoid feeling one emotion then something happens and their emotion changes

Level 6: Advanced Humanoid Movement
Final Project: Have a humanoid move a weighty object somewhere (push pull carry whatever you want)

Level 7: Acting
Final Project: Have 2 characters put a letter in a mailbox, show who it's for with body language.

Grande Finale
10 seconds max. Show us something cool demonstrating what you've learned.

Bootcamp is self graded, so you move on when your ready for a challenge and think you've learned the skills for that level.

Sorry, animation is a skill, only way to learn it is with practice, practice, practice. It's hard, but it's fun.

So I notice that people keep returning to the Old Bootcamp probably because it has actual excercises listed. So here's a list of excercises for the new Ultimate Boot Camp (I think I'll make a thread so we can all add more excercises as we think of them). Do as many excercises as are fun and helpful to you to learn the skills you need to make a decent final piece for the level's final project. Ultimate Animation Boot Camp description Anyway...

Ultimate Animation Boot Camp Excercises:

Level 1: Basic Movement
Final Project: 2 living balls of different weight/material interacting. 1 ball should have a tail.
Excercises
make a cycle of a ball bouncing in place.
drop two balls of different materials/weight, let their bouncing come to a stop

drop a ball with a tail, let its' bouncing come to a stop
bounce a not alive ball with a tail across the screen
bounce 2 alive balls across the screen

make a bounce cycle for an alive ball (like a walk cycle but bouncing)
make a hop cycle for a Pixar lamp

You can use the original(old) bootcamp as a place to get ideas for excercises to get your skills ready for final projects. The original abc doesn't go very high up the Levels though.

So here's a place you can post any animation excercises you can think. Then hopefully people will have a huge pot of possibilities so they can grab an idea for an excercise and get to work improving their animation skills.

Big long thread on this over at CGChar

ooh ooh there's also all the Animation Mentor excercises they have to do (google for their web ring)

Like, build a pose demonstrating: strength
devestation,
exhaustion
excitement

make a one legged ball hop
Mr. Ball vanilla walk
Mr. Ball walk with attitude
humanoid vanilla walk
humanoid walk with attitude
take a character from relaxed, to interested, engaged, then dejected

humanoid using a saw
humanoid using a sledge hammer
humanoid using a pogo stick.

( I had originally avoided making lists because it seemed like they could go on and on forever (like these ones are doing) but since so many people keep doing the old bootcamp threads maybe a list is helpful to them)

Probably more helpful if I listed which level things are good for, but I've been typing way to long now and I need to go animate.

Post your ideas.
