Some of you may remember back in the Rants and Raves days, I started a thread called "I Hate Anime." Well, I would like to apologize for that. I have changed my mind. There is still alot of anime that I don't like but there are a few now that I can watch and one that I think is probably among the best cartoons ever, Full Metal Alchemist.
So, I decided to try and model Al. I have a pretty good start on him but I can't find a good profile of his body so I am sort of stuck here. Does anyone know where I can get a good side view? I am just modeling him for kicks and will probably make the model available to anyone who would like it if/when I finish it.

instantly recognizable! good job!
his suit is clearly based on medieval armor, so just fill in the blanks with suits that look similar, then just double the width. ' ' )

Thanks Jon and Specter. It doesn't look like I am going to find the perfect side view I was looking for. But I did find some nice details in the images from Specter's second link. I will have to try and sort of piece him together like you suggest Jon. I might buy the 6" action figure

Might be some pics in the dvd extras also, if you can rent it or want to buy it.

You could try to find a download of the episodes. I think there was a scene in one of the early episodes, 1-5, where Al is practicing fighting, and it gives a perfect profile shot. You might want to look into that. The actual anime is your best resource.

That looks great! He is definitely not the easiest character to model.
I have to ask, how did you do his eyes? I have a character with similar eyes that I have been putting off.
To be honest I really don't like Fullmetal Alchemist that much. (I've seen like three episodes and they were all out of order so nothing made sense)
I ran an image search on Google and found this wallpaper. Hope it helps!
(It looks like his head isn't 100% profile but the rest of his body seems to be.)

Yeah the first few episodes go into a flashback, if you can get past those you know the whole backstory.

I saw the first episode when Adult Swim first had it on. I just forget to watch so I miss a lot of the story. This is the same reason I don't like Trigun. I love the whole idea of alchemy. Actually the main character of my movie is a homuculus. I just like the way it's portrayed in the game Shadow of Destiny better than Fullmetal Alchemist. Maybe I'll re-install limewire and check out some of the episodes I missed

Thanks, he turned out to be alot more difficult than I thought when I started out. I have put him on hold as it was just one of those "I am bored, I think I will model this," kind of things. I do that too much and then never get any where.
His eyes are just spheres and I modeled a sort of hood shape inside the helmet that is black. Maybe the wire frame will show what I am talking about better.

Wow! It's even more amazing in wire frame! The black hood inside the helmet is what I thought I would do, I just didn't think it would look so nice.
Here's the concept art for him so far.

I almost forgot, those "'I am bored, I think I will model this,' kind of things" are not a waste because they are a great way to practice.
Here's another profile picture for you. It's the cover art of the video game soundtrack. If you want a picture of him from behind let me know because I think the Japanese soundtrack has a picture of him from behind on the cover. (Sorry, the picture doesn't show much but it seems to be more "profile" than the last one)

I just checked out the official web page and found this pic. It may not work as a rotoscope but it might be handy as a reference.
