Forgive me of my harsh shadow sins. It's more of a water fall thing.

That's a nice effect!
If you were going to tweak it, maybe the rebounding water at hte bottom should be more mist-like and less fountain-like.

That is excellent - I would be happy enough just to hear the 2 sentence explanation - what did you use? sprites?, animated whatza's? - very effective

o that does look good!
Im guessing emmitter top of the falls using sprites

Yeah I know what you mean about the fountain look. Dang, why don't I tweak before the render. I get too giddy about the output. It's a pretty simple sprite emitter and it's emitting from an invisible 8x2 grid at the top. Give it an initial velocity so it pushes out, turn on collision detection, give it a bounce percentage to bounce a bit off the walls of the canyon. The particles are coming down straight but the angle at which each comes down varies by 20 percent (but they don't spin as they come down) to give it some randomness. The targa file for the particle is even more simple I would be too embarassed to show a close up. It's practically a rectangle with a veriticle "handle" in the upper corner and another vertical "handle" down in the lower opposing corner. It just looked the best of all the little scribbles I did.
There is a mist emitter coming up from the pond below but you don't see it all that much because the animation ends. All that churn and the fountain look is a result of the particles bouncing off the pond at the bottom. I actually wanted to show more of that because the pond had an animated displacement map and would have added to it all but my computers have too little memory and were bursting at the seams down there where all those particles were gathering (256 mb on the ones that were bursting).
I think if I were to tweak as robcat had suggested, I would make the waterfall end just as it touched the pond at the bottom and have another emitter placed more specifically and angled properly coming up from the pond.

I love that! Well done. I spent quite some time trying to get a decent waterfall effect and failed miserably. Add some sound to this and it would be amazing!
I would be interested in knowing how long it took to render.

Isn't that funny - I often find when I try and create what I think an emitter should look like - it doesn't work as well as sometimes a totally random-created-for- something else image

640x480 4 passes and one light source with 2 ghz computer at I think was 4 to 6 minute renders per frame depending on how many particles were present.
Also thought you might like to see all the dynamics these little sprites can do. The targa picture file I used for this test waterfall is master particle man johnl3d's foam.tga.

I was going to suggest putting some rocks or protrusions that would split the fall but you took care of that in the second download. You rule!

Thankyou for all the kind words. I would agree it would be interesting to see the pool below and maybe some cascades at the end of the pool. Ok I have a bit of motivation to do more with it now. I'll have to spend some more money on memory. Marlin Perkins, however, will have to come much, much later.

The first one is great, the second one is incredible! Both are better than my attempts so far....
Here's mine with particles:

And here's a more recent test with an animated decal.
I'm thinking that if I'm going to do a fairly straight waterfall (as opposed to markeh's second example which is really best suited to particles) I plan to use a combination of the two. The animated decal on a waterfall geometry, (with some animated deformations so it looks a little more lively), and some particle splashes here and there, especially where rocks might be sticking out, and some particle steam at the bottom....

I thought I posted to this thread already, but I guess I didn't. Man, those are somply amazing. It just proves that sometime you're just good enough, or get lucky enough, with something and it just works. Awesome.

This is the churn at the bottom of the falls. Churn. That word makes me a little woozie. The churn is a oval shaped model with a very simple cellturb material applied with a given displacement percentage. Then, the y and z translate values are changed over time in the choreography. I added the mist emitter to the churn model. It appears to me, unless my eyes mistaken me, that the water fall sprites are being affected by the animated displacement of the churn model. Very cool of AM. My wife says, "make it blend more". Wives.

You just saved me a bunch of money! We were going to go to Niagara Falls in July, but this certainly will make that a disappointment! Nice work!
One minor crit, hopefully easily fixed. The blue water leaving the churned section seems to be flowing toward the falls rather than away from it.

Wow, cool thread! Neat particle effects. If you watch the second disc of Phantom Menace, (or was it Clones?), there's a bit on how a guy made the waterfall for a deleted scene where the bongo goes over a waterfall. He uses real elements of waterfalls mapped onto a 3D surface, sprites, and, surprise surprise, video of pouring salt. Go figure.

Oh, and dare I mention that other package? *cough* MAYA *cough* has an amazing fluid effects generator. They had a little video on their site about how they developed it, and then just for fun ported it to the PocketPC.

Thats an amazing water effect. How do you get it to bounce off surfaces like that?
