Hi all,
Saw this movie a little while ago and had a browse through here and it hasn't seem to get a mention. It is a full feature anime basically in 3D with cel-shading (i think). Personally, this movie is a standpoint to 3D anime movie making, if you haven't seen this and you are into 3D and anime - this is a must.

Yeah, I saw that when it came out. (I live in Tokyo, so I have lots of opportunities to see things in theatres.)
I absolutely hated it.
From an animation standpoint some of the animation was quite nice. I especially loved how the sheets got mussed up when she laid on the bed after she'd been brought back from the city. But it had a number of serious issues:
1) They couldn't decide on photorealism or anime-style, so the whole movie was a strange mishmash of the two.
2) They took a Shirow manga (something long and well-thought-out and packed full of story) and tried to fit it into a movie. The plot had so many gaps in it you'd think it was the titanic after it'd hit that iceberg.
3) The animation was at times uneven. It seemed like they randomly jumped between mocap and hand-done stuff, which worked half the time and didn't the other half.
Basically, I left the theatre wanting my money back. I don't know why people think they can take a Shirow manga and do it as anything less than a series. Even Ghost in the Shell, as amazing as it was, barely scratched the surface. (Innocence was, in my opinion, a beautiful idea wrapped in confusion.)
But did anyone else actually like Appleseed? I'd be curious as to why.

you hated it really??
well you do have a point with the whole killing of the story in comparsion to the manga - but that has happened with quite a few anime movies - once comes to mind is that of Akira - lots of gaps in that one. For people who havent read the manga, viewers are still able to follow - not quite as indepth but still there is a plot.
considering this had a more "life-like" feel to the characters, i still think it was able to keep to together the anime-esque feel throughout.
with that said, i was still able to overlook all that and enjoy the feature; animation and all.
