I just bought Disney's releases of the Studio Ghibli movies Nausicaa, Porko Rosso and The Cat Returns.
I just saw The Cat Returns for the first time and highly recommend it!
My daughter Julia and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
I'm sure purists might find fault in places but I think Disney has done a great job getting these out to American audiences.
I haven't looked into the extras yet but I'm sure the storyboards and Ghibli Studio history will be most informative.

Is there an option for Japanese Voices with Subtitles for Porco Rosso and Nausica? Real translated subs and not just the english dublation?
If so I'll have to pick them up.

I just checked Porco Rosso and it has:
Languages:
English
Japanese
French
Subtitles:
English for hearing impaired
English
If you mean do the subtitles translate the japanese words verbatim... these are 'NOT' what you are looking for. I think it's all english dublation...
Other than to learn the language I'm not sure what the profit would be in that.

I do find myself thinking along the lines of how to do a lot of the effects Studio Ghibli put together in Animation:Master.

Not Verbatim, just a more accurate sub. Mant times there are story or other changes that are made to the dub and are carried into the sub. Sometimes not. Ah well, will still probably pick them up. Porco Rosso rocks that much.

I bought Spirited away just for its documentary on the creation of the movie. It goes day by day through every job! It rocks! GO MIYAZAKI!

Well, I watched the first half hour of 'Cat Returns' in English with the English subtitles (not captions) and they don't always exactly match. Typically, it was a word different here or there, or a tad verbose than what was actually spoken.

I've noticed that a lot of the translations add stuff or take stuff away that relate to cultural things that the new audience wouldn't get. Like in Spirited Away they added, "And now our prince must cut his hair and leave us" which was put in to show American audiences that the cutting of the topknot was an important symbol. In Japan everyone knows that a samurai whose topknot has been cut is either a wanderer or dead. ^-^
Most of the Disney translations are alright, though. Just be glad you're not going from English to Japanese -- the translations here for Shrek 2 were abysmal.

Nausicaa, Porko Rosso and The Cat Returns are all great animated movies worth watching and studying. Amazing work, simply amazing.

This might be a great place to congratulate Animation:Master user extraordinaire Shao Guee who surely must have studied some of the scenes from these movies.
He did a homage of the alley chase scene from "The Cat Returns" in his animation: "Haruwo".
