Hi. In the animation I'm putting together I have my character opening a door, going through the door and then walking away. I'm having difficulty though in transitioning to the walk. The area that the model takes up after going through the door (the yellow square surrounding him in choreography mode) is larger than that for the walk action so the model moves way over to the left before beginning the walk. Am I supposed to be moving the whole model rather than just various bones to get him through the door?

On the left part of the picture is him just after coming through the door, on the right, is about four frames later when it's compacted again but moved back to the original position. Hmmm, don't think I explained this very well (it's late!!), but hopefully someone can understand and help! Thanks in advance, Tiff.

Hi, Tiffany:

Welcome to the oldest problem in the book. smile.gif

This is always an issue with these sorts of transitions. The good news is there are several different ways to fix it.

The first is to do what you said--move the model bone while animating him going through the door. Unfortunately, this can cause problems with foot slippage.

The second is to change your model bone's interpolation to "hold" and move the model bone to the correct place when the walk cycle starts. It'll be a pain to line it up exactly, but it should work, provided your walk cycle simply "pops" on (i.e. there's no transition into it).

The third involves re-doing your animation, but is probably the best solution. You need to place your model outside the door--where he needs to end up to begin the walk, in other words--at the first frame of the animation. Then, bring his skeletal bones back inside the door, and animate from there, so he ends up back on top of his model bone. To put it in your terms, his yellow box will be shrinking, rather than growing, over the course of the animation.

You might be able to fix what you've got already by moving his model bone to the proper place, and then turning off Animate mode and moving the skeletal bones back to where they were. Otherwise, you'll need to re-do all the animation to make this last thing work.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so so much! I'll have a play around. Unfortunately there's about 12 seconds of animation before this point so don't know whether the third one is an option, but I'll make a backup and play around.
